You may already know this, but make sure you mean Rumney and not Rhymney
(also spelled Rhymni). Rhymney is north of Caerphilly near Merthyr and
Rumney is near Newport. My GGrF lived in Rhymney for about 10 years, and
I had hell's own time between all the obits and family stuff written
after his death which had the two places mixed.
As to Glamorgan or Monmouth, I think both Rhymney and Rumney were in each
at one time or another as the boundaries shifted. I never have quite
figured that out with regard to my family records, as I have the same
mix.

I have spent hours trying to track down any official or semi-official information on the Home Guard Battalions in Nantgarw and Taffswell area in 1941-1942. As far as I can see there are no sources of information available.
Do any Glam-listers have information to hand or can they direct me to a source of information on the above?
This is such a useful site as it always seems to have someone to hand who can answer those strange odd ball queries that we are faced with on times!! Glam-listers are a great virtual crowd!!

Hi all,
I wrote to Steve off-list earlier today on this. However, taking up Gareth's comment on "a my rhagddy wededig", I read this as "am y rhag ddywededig". One then gets the sense of something along the lines of: also, the above mentioned (previously mentioned, forementioned) William Nicholas. Similarly for Ann in the next sentence.

Pam wrote - Until I read this, I thought that quoits was a shipboard game only!
I think this game must have originated with farmers and was taken up by the mining communities as I (and Gwenda !) can remember having a go at this in the late 20/30s when the 'quoits' used were old horse shoes - Gwenda in the farming communities of Carmarthenshire and me in the Rhondda valleys .The target was a short pole driven into the ground about 20 yards from the line. The 'fancy dan' quoits shown in the pictures must have been a post war invention !

Hello
I am not familiar with the 1891 census that was mentioned in reply to Lyn's posting - I gather it is on CD Rom? Does it cover Rumney? I always forget if Rumney is in Glamorgan or Monmouth, as I have seen it listed as both. Does the 1891 census just cover Glamorgan? I was wondering if it would be possible to have a lookup for the household of:
JONES Benjamin, b. abt. 1821 and wife JONES Sarah. I believe they would still have been living in Rumney at the time.
However, if this is not on CD ROM, don't bother! I don't want to put anyone out when I could just order in the fiche and trawl through it :)
Thanks in Advance!

Gareth replied -
Hi Steve
This is both straightforward, and a real puzzler, I hope Allen is looking in
!
ER COF AM WILLIAM AC ANN NICHOLAS
[In memory of William and Ann Nicholas]
[O'r plwyf hwn=From this parish]
yr hwn a fu fawr Mawrth 14eg, 1819; yn 5 Mis oed.
[(fawr=farw.) who died March 14th 1819; at 5 months old]
This can't relate to William and Ann, must be something missing here, the
name of another child apparently but not this couple's since 1819 was when
William himself was born, an odd coincidence ?
Hefyd Llewelyn, eu Mab a fu fawr Rhagfyr y 23ain 1854; yn 2 flwydd oed.
[Also Llewelyn, their son who died Dec 23rd 1854; aged 2 years]
Hefyd a my rhagddy wededig WILLIAM NICHOLAS; a fu farw Ionawr y 14eg. 1864;
yn 45 mlmydd oed.
[Also "a my rhagddy wededig" William Nicholas who died Jan 14th 1864; aged
45 years ]
Hefyd a my rhagddy wededig ANN NICHIOLAS. bu fawr - wrth8, 1886; yn ----
lwydd oed.
[Also "a my rhagddy wededig" Ann Nicholas who died March ? 8th 1886; aged ?
years]
I can't make sense of the "a my rhagddy wededig" part.
My guess would be words meaning 'fore mentioned', 'rhag' does mean fore.
Although the word 'uchod' for above is normally used in this context [in my
experience].
Gareth
What an interesting gravestone - any piccies available Steve ?
Was the stone first used for the 2 young children and the other names added at a later date ?. does the style of lettering change ? Are there any signs of the original names having been
deleted ?
I think "a my rhagddy wededig" should read "am y rhagddywedig" which translates as Gareth has it - "Also of the fore-mentioned.".
Allen
Hi Gang,
Have had some new leads on my Great Grandfather
William CLARKE (born 1853 Oxford).
I have now discovered that he died on October 2nd 1919 and that he had
connections to Merthyr Tydfil Engine Sheds and also owned a public house in
Merthyr Tydfil.
These are the only details I have - can anyone out there fill in the gaps ?
A very happy, healthy and peaceful New Year to you all.
Sue
Hi Chris
Coedfrank, now known as SKEWEN, is a village two miles outside of Neath, West Glamorgan, west towards Swansea.
What sort of date do you have for the birth of your ancestor and what is the name you are looking for?
Pat
Hi all
My grandmother was Mary Jane AMESBURY (b 1880, Mangotsfield, Bristol d 1950, Maesteg)
She married my grandfather Gwilym EDMUND (b 1876, Llanblethian Mill d 1959, Maesteg) in 1903 at Ramoth Baptist Chapel, Cowbridge)
Their marriage certificate gives Mary Jane's occupation as Domestic Servant and her place of residence as, what appears to be,
Glendare (or Gleudare), Cowbridge.
I would be grateful if anyone could help me pinpoint this residence.
Regards and Happy New Year
Mike (Swansea Wales)
