Dear List,
The 1851 census for Porthcawl lists the birthplace of Margaret Howell as
Nottage, while the 1861 census lists what looks like Aupum.( Hard to read)
Her birth would have been about 1792.
Can SKS please tell me the correct place name and where it is?
Thanks in advance,
John

Hi Gael,
Your mention of Swansea prompted me to look in Pigot's Directory of 1835
and I spotted John TREGASKIS under bakers and flours dealers. Then he was
at Strand, Swansea.

Hi!
Does anyone know what kind of drink this was or is? My g-grandmother was a wine & spirit merchant and was an agent for this...
Thanks!
Carol in Edinburgh
Yo, Richard,
The family in which you have an interest are living at 42, Gwendoline St., Treherbert, in the parish of Ystradyfodwg in 1891.
JOHN HARRIES HD M 46 COALMINER BRE RHYMNEY
ELIZABETH HARRIES WI M 40 CMN CWMDU
ISAAC HARRIES SO U 17 COALMINER GLA ABERDARE
JOHN HARRIES SO U 11 SCHOLAR GLA ABERDARE
ELIZABETH HARRIES DA U 14 GLA ABERDARE
SARAH HARRIES DA U 9 SCHOLAR GLA ABERDARE
MARGARET HARRIES DA U 7 SCHOLAR GLA YSTRADYFODWG
ESTHER HARRIES DA U 1 GLA YSTRADYFODWG
DAVID HARRIES SO U 3M GLA YSTRADYFODWG
Ten years previously the family were living at 6, Margaret Street, Aberdare, John being just 1 years of age. ( 1881 Census )
I don`t know of a Rhymney in BRE, so would treat that with caution, there are three Cwmdu, one of them being in Dyfed.
John`s wife, who gave her address at tha time of the wedding as 72 Regent St. Treorchy, Ystradyfodwg, will be more difficult to find as that particular house did not exist in 1891. Only 22 of the houses in that street had been built at the time.
I hope you don`t mind me putting this mail through the list, but I have an interest myself in the Harries family from BRE, and it might be picked up by someone with a similar interest.
Best wishes, Ceri.

I was intrigued by Gareth's email about the annual reports of chapels. I hope any replies are posted so the whole list can see the answers.
My ancestors and probably many other's were very active in Chapels in Wales and the reports sound invaluable for family research
My particular interest at this time is Mount Carmel English Baptist Church in Caerphilly before 1931 and St. Saviour's in Roath around 1900. The latter is High Anglican. Would there have been "Chapel" Records for High Anglican churches?
What an interesting list this is!!

Good afternoon again Listers,
I am looking for a man who may have been an official in one of the mines in Ystradyffodwg in the early part of the 1900's.
His name is William Davies and originally he came from West Wales, possibly Tal - y - bont, Cardiganshire.
He died in Treorchy in 1946 and is buried in the cemetery there. Age about 76. He was a hard drinker and a womaniser apparently and "strong as an Ox"?
Anyone from the Rhondda that may remember this man or are there mining records that may have him listed?
A long shot but you never know!

I have often read of "brick walls". Now I know what it means - I have two. I
am looking for help with one of them, please. Unfortunately, it is not a
Glamorgan problem but I have seen how helpful everyone can be and can hope.
Does anyone have access to the 1891 Census for Salford, Lancashire, please?
Details that I have from the 1881 Census are:
Address: 4 Cannon Street, Salford, Lancashire
NAME AGE BIRTHPLACE OCCUPATION
Thomas Sloggett 33 Plymouth Plasterer
Clara Sloggett 31 Plymouth
Gertrude Dloggett 11 Plymouth
Jessie Sloggett 9 Plymouth
Maude Sloggett 6 Plymouth
Nellie Sloggett 2 Salford
Ada Sloggett 1month Salford
I am hoping that in 1891 they were at the same address, as above, although
they may have returned to Plymouth. I would like to know of any addtions to
the family between 1881 and 1891. In particular I am looking for a Thomas
Sloggett born around 1886, which would make him 4 or 5 years old in 1891 (if
my arithmetic is OK) - he was aged 24 in October 1910.
Any help or guidance in how to climb this "brick wall" would be much
appreciated.

Hi Again
Ref article named above. Think that I should have said 'Short' and not 'Shot'
list of officers. Ho-hum another mistake for the record books : ))

Allen Powell has recently mentioned on the Glamlist the potential usefulness
of the annual reports produced by chapels. His particular reference was in
the context of the 'Adroddiad for Saron chapel, Ynyshir for 1949.
Allen has pointed out to me off list that this material appears to be a
largely unknown and under used gen-resource, he's right !
We both now wonder to what extent these are extant, in local Archives,
Chapel secretaries lofts, members' hands etc etc ?
This reminded me that I have several of these for the two local
Congregational chapels in Cwmgors and Gwauncaegurwen that my parents were
members of, and I have now added these to the Lookup Exchange.
These unfortunately only date from the 1970s, it would be fascinating to
know when they started to be produced and also if other denominations did
something similar.
They contain a full list of members who made financial contributions to the
chapel's finances during the year, e.g collections in chapel, donations via
wills etc. They show exactly how much each person gave, which is an
interesting method [by design or not] of boosting chapel income by ensuring
people tried not to appear 'mean' compared with other members!
They also show the names of the chapel officials, and a balance sheet etc.
I would be quite happy to include an extract of the names and addresses from
a particular chapel's Adroddiad on the 'Not everyone knows this pages', but
only for those dated *pre 1900* because of the Data Protection Act's
implications.
I feel no similar constraint not to have any and all [whatever their dates]
on the LE for *lookups* however, so please send me brief details of any that
you might have and are prepared to share in this way, via the list is fine.
The name of the relevant parish would be helpful too.
Thanks Allen.

Hi all
Just a short mail to let you know that due to our exhibition of the 6th
October that a number of new exhibits have been brought to light and we that
we are always willing to share names which might be of interest to those
researching their respective family histories on this list. In consequence we
publish a group of names which came in with our latest acquisition today.
They relate to an image of the Police House / Station, Located On Ship Hill,
Barry. Circa 1935. Please note that the image does not contain the persons
that served within building. Shot list of serving police officers now follow.
Inspector Lyons
Sgt., William Lunn.
Nine officers were also billeted there under the charge of the
Sgt., these were, please note, named by surname only.
Harry, Reece, Raynish, Moore, Watkins, Warner, Parker, Warener, Roberts and
"Treasure" Thomas. Last name sounds interesting, wonder why he picked up the
nickname "Treasure"?.
Axis would welcome contact with any individual or organisation who may hold
further information or images of these law men.
For those interested in Police Stations. ...and past relatives that might
have seen the inside walls of this establishment : )) the image will be
available for viewing on our web site in the not to distant future.
Talking of our web site - its one you must keep returning to if interested in
the history of Barry and the surrounding area. While you have been away our
timeline keeps growing. The Virtual Museum has its first exhibits and new
images have been added to those already in place.
There are also some new political links in the timeline which will show that
not everyone was for the Incorporation of Barry in 1939. Take time to have a
look around and find more surprises within - then make use of our guestbook
or start a discussion on a point Barry or surrounding local history in our
forum. Url follows for your use.

Hi Listers
My Davies family moved from Llangadock to the Rhondda presumably in the late
1880's turning up in Ystradfydwg in the 1891 Census. From the 1881 Census of
Llangadock have a Esther Rees, 69, Margaret Davies, 64, unmarried (sister,
but poss sister-in-law), both born Cilycwm and a David Walters aged 4,
grandson, born Llangadock. I understand there is a Anna Walters possibly
connected to the family and wonder if any of this family filtered through to
Glamorgan by 1891. If these names mean anythng to anybody, please contact.
Thank you.

The "Monkey" club is still very active. The proper name is the MidRhondda
Workingmen's Club. It is in Court Street, Tonypandy , just a quarter of a
mile up from Tonypandy Square. Not to be confused with the MidRhondda
Central Workmen's Club, about half a mile away in Primrose Street,
Tonypandy.
