Any chance that we might obtain the Abrahams/Abrams Baptisms listed for
Cardiff? The early records to about 1840.
Thank you.

Rest Bay Flight. I remember that flight and plane. The cost was 2/5 - a
lot of money in those days - and as far as I can recall the plane had no
doors and we sat on bench seats facing each other.

Dave,
Sorry, we have a Harry Thomas in the tree, but he was a son of
W.G.Thomas, and was a reporter on a local newspaper. I guess you`ll have to
keep looking.

G'day Thomas,
I wonder if you have come across a Harry Thomas. He was a Police
Constable in Roath County Glamorgan. Born about 1863 and married
Frances (Fanny) Prince in 1885. His father was Samuel Thomas.
Frances was a sister of my GGrandfather from Somersetshire.
Cheers,

Hi Connie,
"Masagwanan Estate" is probably the Maes-y-gwernen Estate which was
situated north of Swansea, near Cwmrhydyceirw, between Llangyfelach and
Ynysforgan. The land now lies alongside the M4 Motorway and is occupied
by a housing development which includes Maes-y-gwernen Close,
Maes-y-gwernen Road, and Maes-y-gwernen Drive. I believe the golf course
belonging to Morriston Golf Club is also built on what was once part of
the Maes-y-gwernen Estate. The estate would have been in the parish of
Llangyfelach.
"Pennfraig Farm" could be Pen-y-graig Farm. There is a Pen-y-graig Road
running from the Mount Pleasant to Mayhill districts of Swansea, but I
do not know where Pen-y-graig Farm (if it ever existed) was located.
Best wishes,
John

Hello Eileen,
Your friend would probably find a visit to the Reference Library
in Barry useful. They now have a local studies section with
electoral rolls, street directories, fiche viewers and some census
records and are helpful-- it would probably be better than Cardiff
Ref Library, though of course the Glamorgan Record Office is needed
for more advanced research. Worth checking out before she comes, though.
Regards, Margaret

Hello Cynthia,
I cannot answer all of the questions you pose and will leave them to others
more knowledgeable than myself. However, I do want to use your query as an
opportunity to persuade you and others of the benefit of researching your
ancestors through school records.
They are a wonderful resource and I have used them a great deal in locating
members of my family in and around Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.
The records can be quite extensive in respect to a particular school, and to
some extent depend upon the size and importance of the school. The two
records I commonly use are the schools Log Book and the school's Admission
Register. The former often details the day to day comings and goings at the
school eg. - Sept.9th 1887 "very small attendance, mushroom gathering much
interferes with the attendance now", or take this example from March
18th,1889, "Admitted Martha Jane Vaughan. Very small attendance. There are
many children ill with bad coughs and colds. Work in school has been
interrupted by incessant coughing. The worst have been requested to stay at
home until better. Ringworm has also been prevalent, necessitating the
absence of whole families". As you can see, it can be a wonderful resource
for social history and setting the scene in which one's forbears lived.
The Admission Register identifies every child who became a scholar at the
school, their date of admission, date of birth, parent (usually father's
name only given), and address. Their last date of attendance is also
recorded as is the reason for leaving.
A good Public Record Office like the one at Haverforwest will have many such
records for the schools within its district or County. You simply identify
the school you are interested in and - if you're lucky - there will be lots
of documentation you can examine such as those described above.
There is an excellent chapter on the history of education in Wales and
education records in "Welsh Family History " edited by Rowlands J & S and
published by the Association of Family History Societies in Wales. ISBN 0
9520727 o X. I obtained my copy from Rallymaps of West Wellow in Romsey,
Hampshire who have a web site:
www.rallymap.demon.co.uk
Best wishes,
Tony Price

Would anyone on the list have access to the 1891 census for swansea.
I am looking for Kostromin. They came from Finland & I have just found
out that my Grandfather was born in 1889 in Swansea. I am trying to find
the rest of his brothers. Also does anyone know of David Hardee he owned
the Britannia inn around this time. My Grandfather owned a bicycle shop
with Dan Evans, which may have been on Oxford St. Any help will be most
appreciated. And yes I am related to all the Kostromins in Swansea.
Hope to be there in October. Last time was in 1980 when my Mum died.

Hello fellow List members,
It has been a long time since I have submitted my surname interests --
ROBERTS and BOWEN, and if I may, I would like to do so now.
I am searching the ancestors of David Daniel ROBERTS, B. 1883 Swansea
area. Immigrated to USA 1895
David's father was William James ROBERTS, B. 1849 Amlwch, Anglesey
(baptized in Pentreafelin) D. 1885
David's mother was Ann BOWEN, B. 1850, Llanelly, Carmarther, Wales. D.
1884 Llangyfelach, Gla.,Wales
William James ROBERTS father was David ROBERTS, B. 1820, Llanfyllin,
Montgomery Co. ( I believe now Powy Co.). He is buried on family farm
one mile from Pontardulairs. William's mother's name was Jane (no
surname).
David ROBERTS father was David ROBERTS, B. 1790 in Llanfyllin,
Montgomery Co. Wales Mother was named Jane.
It appears that this family moved from one end of Wales to the other and
back again over the years. William James ROBERTS and Ann BOWEN had
their first son, William James, in 1873 Liverpool, England. Returned to
Wales and had a second son, Joseph Thomas, somewhere in Wales. Returned
to the Swansea area and had son David Daniel ROBERTS in 1883. There
were two "farms" mentioned in family papers -- l. Pennfraig Farm near
Swansea and 2. Masagwanan Estate -- it is believed that this Estate was
owned by the Williams family. William James Roberts, Sr. worked on the
farm taking care of the animals. Do either of these two locations ring
a bell with anyone?
I have really hit a brick wall with my husband's family and would
greatly appreciate any help that's available. Thank you for taking the
time to read my email.
Best Regards, from sunny Washington State, USA
Connie
