Hello Charles Cusak,
Westfalen is a part of Germany (west/central). There is indeed a town,
Altenberge, which is just NW of Muenster. I was near there while riding my
bike to Holland (no hills). Altenberge is ca 90 bike minutes NE of
Muenster, a very attractive town with several lovely old Wasserschloesser
(Castles surrounded by water) in the area. The border with the Netherlands
is ca 30 miles west of Altenberge. Enschede is the largest near-by Dutch town.
I called information for the name of the Catholic Church there. The listing
gave a number for "Catholic Community", and the Kindergarten which the RC
church operates: St. Martin's Kindergarten.
It's Fri. night here in Germany..., already after ten, too late to call.
Besides, the woman who runs the office won't be back until Monday. I'll
call then and ask about 1823 records/names, etc., i.e. to make sure you
won't be barking up the wrong tree/the wrong Altenberge!
I counted nine Altenberge/Altebergen in the German zip code book. The one
above was the only Westfalen Altenberge. (Quite a distance from Reichenberg
in far northern Bohemia.) ?
