The most recent election was intended to serve as a test, even though we
only had one candidate, and some glitches did occur. It was possible to
check yes and no, although only the yes (appearing first reading left to
right) was recorded. Some people got a strange message after they submitted
their vote, instead of a message verifying they had voted.
We do need to have another test before the next election two years from
now. We don't really need to open it up to the whole group, maybe just the
RAs... just enough votes to test the system.
I don't anything other than "your vote has been recorded" should appear
following submission. Certainly, we don't want to display how our CCs
voted, but even a vote total has the potential of swaying the election.
Word gets out that John Doe has a substantial lead over Jane Doe, then
folks stop voting for Jane, thinking she has no chance to win (remember
Florida... central time zone... Al Gore).
In the past, we have used independent, disinterested vote counters who
received all the votes via email and reported back only the totals. The
reason it has been done this way is so that no one within the project had a
opportunity to see or manipulate the vote. I don't know of any way we could
set up a system completely within the project that would not have the
potential for abuse. Of course, I don't think any one of us would abuse the
voting system, but whoever sets up a system would have complete access to it.
I don't oppose changing the system of having independent counters. I just
don't know of a better way. Perhaps Sylvia does.

Well why couldnt we have a "mock" election with just to test
the program
we used for the past SC election with more than 1 candidate? maybe not all
would particapate but I bet several would and we would need just enough to
see if it worked. We would need someway to post the voters vote to keep
every thing open some folks would sooner or later will say the vote was
rigged. I have voted in some online polls aand d as soon as I cast my vote
a page came up giving the results of the poll thus far. I am not sure if
anyone would want to see a page that gave who voted for who ie...John C
Public voted for Ed Gordon, Jane Doe voted for Debbie etc....
Excluding me we have some pretty smart cookies with GAGenWeb.
