I would like to see us require that the national and state logos be
links... much more efficient and easy for the researcher that way.
That works for me. I agree it's more efficient and easy that way. The logos on
my own pages are links and that's where I usually look for links.
I have not found a surname page that difficult to maintain, but agree
that
search capability effectively serves the purpose of putting researchers in
touch with each other. Which begs the question: should we require search
engines? It is one of the first things I look for when I am researching.
I don't know if we should require a search engine or not, but it should at least
be recommended. Especially for large sites. Free Find is good and easy.
Jacki, what "specifics" do we need for links to neighboring
counties? Links
to all counties whose borders touch?
I slightly modified the "links to neighboring counties" phrasing to
"individual
links to neighboring countires". My thought is the word individual should make
it clear that a link to the county table isn't enough for that. (That was one of
the particular examples used instead of individual links.)
When doing my site visits, I have been using six months as a standard
for
updating, but I am flexible on anything from quarterly to nine months.
Anything beyond nine months is stretching it. What do we consider
"updating?" For example, I am not going to expect Brantley County (org.
1920) to be posting data as often as, say, Chatham. But, I do expect links
to be checked. I don't think we should have more than one time period.
Requiring links checks quarterly and updating every six months is just too
much for me to remember. :-)
I can see that side of the argument easily - one time frame is much simpler to
deal with. Maybe go with the 6-month time frame as a requirement for both but
suggest that links should be checked quarterly?
I like the idea of having a list of requirements AND a list of
suggestions.
Requirements would be bare minimum standards; suggestions those things that
make our pages better for researchers. A "what's new" page OR
"updated"
tags probably would be better as suggestions, as would links to "About" and
the county index table.
Would someone like to break down our current list into requirements and
suggestions? Or do we want them all to be requirements? (At least until comment
from the CCs)
Anything else that we should add to either list?
Thanks y'all!
Jacki
