I think there are actually 2 questions here (and they're kinda hard to
phrase):
1) Should the CCs in, say, the Metro Region vote only for someone to be
*their* RA, or should they help decide on *all* of the RAs? Put another
way... will I vote for an RA candidate in every region, or just for an RA
for my own region?
2) Should RA candidates be required to host a county within the region they
"RA" for? (ie; if my county is in the Coastal Region, can I run for RA of
the Metro Region?).
My thoughts on #2: I think it's definitely preferable for an RA to be a
member of his/her region, for the reasons Melody gave. We tend to get to
know our "neighbors." Plus, there are certain resources or research issues
unique to the different parts of Georgia, and an RA who hosts a county in
their own region will be more familiar with them. However... there may be
times when none of the CCs in a certain region feel up to the RA job. In
that case, it's better to have an RA from outside the region than none at
all. Another scenario: what if the only candidate from my region is someone
the CCs just don't work well with; they'd much rather elect someone with
whom they have a good rapport, even if he/she doesn't have a county in their
region. For those reasons, I think that while it's better for an RA to be
part of his/her region, I don't feel strongly that it should be a
requirement... unless it gets to the point where 100s of people want to be
RAs.
Jeanne
I agree with Jeanne. I believe that the RAs should be elected from
among
the
CCs in their own region. While I may be familiar with a lot of the
CCs
(especially those those who post regularly on GAGEN), I believe that one
gets to know the CCs in their particular region. At least that's the way
it's been for me. A lot of the surnames cross over the county lines or one
county may have been part of another county in theat region at one time.
for example, Coffee County was once a part of Telfair, Irwin, both of
which
are in the South Central Region, so I've gotten to know some of
the other
CCs well.
