Jacki,
1. I explained the schedule and details of the election and called for
nominations on GAGen-L. I allowed one week (seven days) for nominations,
one week for campaigning and one week for voting. Candidates were announced
on GAGen-L.
In total, we had eight candidates and eight regions, although some regions
had no candidates, and others had more than one. Because of this situation,
I decided that RA candidates did not have to coordinate counties in the
region they would represent. After some discussion of this issue on
GAGen-L, the candidates and I worked out who would run in what region. I
believe it would be better for RAs to have counties in their regions. I
anticipate that as the project grows stronger and more counties are
adopted, we will have more candidates for future elections.
2. Sylvia Rankin built a web page that contained the following elements:
Names and description of the regions
Names of candidates by region
Virginia Crilley's RA job description
Email links for voting
This page was not linked to the state page, but the url was posted on GAGen-L.
3. Joy Fisher found two volunteers who were willing to be election
monitors. Votes via email went only to the monitors. The monitors were
subbed to GAGen-L. They posted reminders periodically. The monitors counted
the votes and reported the results on GAGen-L. Since the election also
served as a roll call, the monitors also provided me with a list of who
voted (not how).
Because we are rebuilding the project, I had no precedent or bylaw for
guidance. While our first RA election went well, I am sure the membership
can suggest ways to the Bylaws Committee to make the process better. Please
remember, however, that RA elections will have to be conducted "in house."
The national Elections Committee does not conduct elections on any level
lower than state coordinator.
If I have forgotten any part of what we did, please don't hesitate to add
to this.
By the way, if anyone is interested in volunteering to serve on the Bylaws
Committee, please contact Jacki Jonas:
