Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I motion that we accept the purpose or mission statement as posted by Jacki.

Hi y'all,
I sent the message quoted below a couple of days ago. Does this plan sound
good to you? I'm open for suggestions. I'm thinking of roughly a
topic/section a week, at least until it's clear that a particular subject
will take longer.
Should we have subgroups working on other things in the meantime, or just
focus as a complete group on one thing at a time?
Sylvia was hoping to get some progress made on the discussion board today.
I'll let you know when that's up and working. We are hoping for soon.
So, let me know what you think of my plan of action. Like I said, I'm open
for suggestions if you think something else might work better.
Thanks,
Jacki

I've modified Deborah's suggestion with Vivian's suggestions -- the result
is below.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The USGenWeb Project is non-commercial and fully committed to free access
for everyone. Organized by county and state, the Project's website provides
links to all the State websites which, in turn, provide gateways to the
counties. The USGenWeb Project also sponsors important Special Projects at
the national level, and the national website provides an entry point to all
of those pages, as well.
The GAGenWeb Project is part of the USGenWeb Project. The purpose of The
GAGenWeb Project shall be to locate, upload, and provide free access to
data of a genealogical and historical nature, and to provide research
direction and referral to other sources, whenever possible, for the benefit
of those pursuing genealogical research in the State of Georgia.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Any more suggestions? I'm also going to post this to GAGEN shortly and ask
CCs to send any suggestions and/or comments to a committee member.
Thanks,
Jacki

I agree. I'll send an email to GAGEN during my lunch hour today. Update on the
discussion board: Sylvia is going to look at it again tomorrow, and I also have
my brother looking into an option for us.

I have no more discussion. Until the discussion board is operational, I
think it would be a good idea to open it up to GAGen-L.

I really like Deborah's Georgia-specific paragraph. I would make no changes
there.
My comments about the first paragraph address only style, not substance.
2nd line: Delete the word, "you." Second person not used in formal writing.
4th line: Add a comma after the word, "level." Replace the word "this" (in
front of website) to read "the national" (for clarity).
Great job, Deborah.

After we finish the purpose/mission statement, I believe the next logical
thing to discuss is membership. You might want to check the old GRC pages
for comments they received (http://www.rootsweb.com/~gacolqu2/Guidelines/)
in preparation for that.
After membership, my plan is to deal with officers -- the election of SC.

Military roster transcriptions are online at Branden Hobgood's website
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Agora/9743/ . Brandon has given permission
for anyone in GenWeb to use anything on Branden's military site. Please be
sure to give him credit, and show link back to his website.

I have no objection to the GenWeb people using anything the information they
need for there websites that we have. You might want to pass around that
there is a book out on the Resaca Confederate Cemetery, This is done by my
uncle Richard who has passed away and my father William Hobgood
link is www.geocities.com/resacacsacem/
Thank You again and hope all can find use of he records.

Sounds like a good combination to me.
Jacki
This section could be a little more complex that the first :-)
First, the purpose of the USGenWeb, as stated in their current bylaws:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Section 1. The USGenWeb Project is an organized group of volunteers working
to create an online center for genealogical research by linking every
county in the United States. The purpose of this organization shall be to
gather genealogical and historical information for free online access by
researchers
Section 2. This purpose shall be accomplished by presenting websites which
shall be central repositories of historical and genealogical research data,
donated either by the website coordinator or other contributors. In
presenting this information, the foundation of the organization shall be at
the local websites (county, township, parish, town, etc.) which shall be
linked to the state websites which shall be linked to the national website.
The USGenWeb Project shall also provide a "digital library" called The
USGenWeb Project Archives.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The purpose, as stated in the current guidelines:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The purpose of a GAGenWeb county site is to provide genealogical
researchers with freely accessible records about the county to help further
their family research. A GAGenWeb county site will not be placed to serve
primarily as a directory of county-related links to other sites, or as a
Web site strictly devoted to selling genealogy-related items, such as books
and CD-ROMs.
The purpose of a GAGenWeb Special Project site is to provide genealogical
researchers with freely accessible records and links about the subject with
which the project deals. Because of the nature of special projects, it may
only be a directory of links which may be of some use to family
researchers. A GAGenWeb Special Project will not be placed as a Web site
strictly devoted to selling genealogy-related items, such as books and
CD-ROMs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The proposal the GRC had on the table:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The purpose of The GAGenWeb Project shall be to locate, upload, and provide
free access to data of a genealogical and historical nature, and to provide
research direction and referral to other sources, whenever possible, for
the benefit of those pursuing genealogical research in the State of Georgia.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The aboutUs info from the transition team:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About the GAGenWeb Project
The GAGenWeb's parent project, the USGenWeb Project, consists of a group of
volunteers working together to provide Internet websites for genealogical
research in every county and every state of the United States. The Project
is non-commercial and fully committed to free access for everyone.
Organization is by county and state, and this website provides you with
links to all the state websites which, in turn, provide gateways to the
counties. The USGenWeb Project also sponsors important Special Projects at
the national level and this website provides an entry point to all of those
pages, as well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So -- let's discuss this. What are your thoughts?

The GRC had unanimously voted for:
Article 1: The name of this organization shall be "The GAGenWeb Project."
to be presented to the CCs.
The GAGenWeb Project is appropriate, just as long as we remember it's not GAG enWeb.
I know sick puny, but it is Friday afternoon or soon will be.
So to use the correct format
I move that we accept Article 1.

A better way to Internet
http://www.peoplepc.com
Good morning, all.
Let's start with something simple -- our name.
From the USGenWeb bylaws (http://usgenweb.org/official/bylaws.html):
~~~~~~~~~~~~
ARTICLE I. NAME
The name of this organization shall be "The USGenWeb Project." The name,
"The USGenWeb Project," and "The XXGenWeb Project" (where XX is the
two-letter postal code abbreviation for each state) are service marks and
reserved exclusively for The USGenWeb Project and any websites representing
The USGenWeb Project
~~~~~~~~~~~~
As such, we have the name The GAGenWeb Project. Joy -- do you know the
details about service marks? I'll confess I know nothing about them.
The GRC had unanimously voted for:
Article 1: The name of this organization shall be "The GAGenWeb Project."
to be presented to the CCs.
If you wander around the various county sites, many use the GAGenWeb
Project, but there are some that use GaGenWeb Project or GeorgiaGenWeb or
GA GenWeb or some other variation.
Given the site at http://www.gagenweb.org and their use of The
GeorgiaGenWeb, I think we need to make the name clear.
So -- comments and/or discussion of the name?
Thanks,
Jacki
