<snip> Yesterday was ridiculous...couldn't access anything

One has to take the servers down to replace them - and to keep folks from
making
changes to the 'new' images after they've already been copied to the new
servers.
<snip>
My GAGenWeb county is up and running and stays that way 99% of the
time
because it's on a server that off of RootsWeb. My hosting company several
months ago migrated my site to a new server and install upgrades. This is a
huge hosting company with I'm sure had as much to move as RootsWeb does.
It went smooth as silk...no problems and I was only down a few hours.....NOT
DAYS......apparently they know what they are doing!! I also was told that
they were going to be doing this 14+ days advance...another advantage.
A note was sent to the listowners list on 12 June - so notice was made. No
server
farm can be 100% of the time, it can promise it but it cannot deliver it
for there
are too many factors any one of which can cause servers to be off line.
In the 6 years I've had sites at Rootsweb, I've had perhaps one down time
per year,
which is certainly a much better record than my local ISP which now for the
second
week straight has had 'issues' with their website services - email both
times, this
time the login to web-mail, so for the last Friday and then late last night, I
apparently haven't gotten some mail due to this flub of theirs.
If anyone would like to find a new home for their county,
coincidentally, I
updated that web page last week on 'finding a home' at the CC helps pages
that Tim Stowell asked me to put together last year. that link is:
http://www.ancestraldesigns.com/designtips/
Tim publically thanks you for these pages.
Of course any coordinator can host their sites where they wish, within reason
(one of those areas would be not to host on a known porn server).
Most of GA, FL and AL are on rootsweb. SC and TN are on other servers
and
you can still do research on AL via Lisa Franklin's site "Tracking Your AL
Roots".
Ancestry.com was available all day yesterday even tho RootsWeb
was/is down.
At last tally about a year ago approximately 70% of the USGenWeb Project was
hosted by Rootsweb.
IMPHO, it's past time that all CCs across the US seek alternative
hosting
sites for their county pages so that it is spreadout across the web. But,
there are important things to consider when looking for a new home and those
are also discussed on this same 'finding a home' page. Every company I
listed has been around for quite a while, have 99% up time, have no pop-ups,
are FREE or less than ten bucks a month. Hope it helps!!!
Most folks won't budge from any position until necessity forces them to unless
someone can show them that the new shiny object is worthy of them making the
change. Until I can see some major disadvantage for staying with Rootsweb,
I'm
not moving anywhere else - but that's my personal choice. The rest of you are
of course free to make your own choices.
