I guess I am missing something here - and if I am not getting something
straight here please let me know - I am not "picking on anyone here, I am
simply trying to understand this whole thing below -
So,
In Donna's case cited below - and I am Quoting what she has written below:
"My page has always carried this notice.
"These pages are intended for family and history searchers and are not for
commercial use. When you donate your material, it remains your property and
will be removed at your request."
So I guess
I don't understand how the data that was on ~gaforsyt belongs to another
project??? Did these people request it be moved from the GAGENWEB site? I
did not see logos on there that signified that data was contributed to the
History project, etc. In fact Annette's stuff was on our pages with a link
from the Historical Society on the ones that I looked at. Our project page
for Forsyth was suppose to reside at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaforsyt If
information is posted to a GAGENWEB site - by a cc how is that not project
data unless they are posting their own data? For simplicity sake let's say
it was donated to another project or Society, shouldn't it have stated that
on the page - and Even if it was contributed for another project should it
have been in a folder ~gaforsyth/historicalsociety/data.html or
~gaforsyth/XXXXproject/ to designate the difference, with 700+ pages of data
how would anyone be able to remember who donated what unless you had a
folder system setup that differentiated the difference? I think this is all
wrong here - I specifically asked Donna how was I to tell the difference in
data a couple of weeks ago and at that point she wrote back to tell me she
removed the links and web rings from those pages. All the data was left
intact at that point - which would make one believe that the data there was
GAGENWEB data, (otherwise it should have then had the other project logos
on it); so how now does it become another project's data OR MORE TO THE
POINT ... DID THESE PEOPLE REQUEST THIS INFORMATION BE REMOVED FROM PROJECT
PAGES? Perhaps I am reading something out of context here, but I don't see
how what was yesterday data on a GAGENWEB site <ANY SITE> I am not picking
at Donna here, but it appears she commented below in re to this; is now
today someone else's !
data - These other projects were not in existence or not set up on these
servers when these links were created from our sites to these project pages,
so therefore entities that came into existence afterwards should have
created a web presence other than pointing to a GAGENWEB site UNLESS they
are donating it to that GAGENWEB PROJECT - WHICH IS WHAT HAPPENS IN MY
CASE - ALOT OF THE DATA ON MY PAULDING SITE IS CONTRIBUTED BY THE GEN
SOCIETY - I GIVE CREDIT TO THE PERSON THAT DOES IT, THEY USE IT IN THEIR
QUARTERLIES, BUT SHARE IT WITH ME TO GO ONLINE) - why would the society not
want to donate this to our project pages in the first place?
I guess I am really tired of seeing cc's leave and the data on the project
sites disappearing - I don't think the GAGenWeb project pages are set up as
a "storage facility" for other projects - while I would appreciate any data
anyone wanted to contribute I don't think this project should have pages
setup as warehouses for other entities unless they are "contributing these
to said project".
Also in re to the passwords - I have passwords to most of the websites in my
region - most of them are setup under my name - HOWEVER - feel free to ask
any of them if I have ever violated their space. The answer to that is No,
I have not. In fact I think someone should have access to the sites in the
event something were to happen and a cc needed someone to temporarily update
their site(s) - anyone can have an accident and be hospitalized or have a
death in the family and the last thing that anyone wants to do is to have to
worry about telling someone else how to retrieve passwords or whatever
during times such as that. Tim has passwords to all of my sites and
Virginia does as well, do I feel threatened by that, answer, no - I have no
reason to be - if I walk away from this project what am I going to do ask
every cc in my region to remove the data that I have submitted and put on
their pages at one time or another? Not, I did those pages for their sites,
for the people that are researching, I still have copyright over my
creations, if I wanted to utilize that data elsewhere there is no reason why
I could not do that... the purpose of this project is FREE DATA ONLINE FOR
RESEARCHERS ... I don't see how removing data is inline with that. I don't
think it is appropriate to use GAGenWeb pages to drive people to other sites
off line, the purpose of our project is to put data online IN THIS PROJECT.
Again, please let me reiterate I am not picking on anyone, I am merely
expressing my opinions based on what has been written - I have two SHINING
EXAMPLES IN THE METRO REGION .... Wally Smith - Wendell Taylor .... both of
these folks have created many many pages of data, when they left the sites -
they donated their materials to the site - and I took Wally's sites in the
beginning because he wanted to ensure his data stayed online on those sites.
Wendell continues to contribute to several of my county sites and to the
archives - Don also contributed his when he released his.. and I am sure
there are more that I have overlooked - unfortunately I also have some that
everything was removed
Maybe I am missing something here, but I THOUGHT THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT
WAS "Free Data Online in The GaGenWeb Project" ....

I intend to honor this statement. If this had not been the policy, then I
might not have been able to display some of the material that I have.
I have been hosting the Historical Society of Forsyth County by Donna
Parrish on my Forsyth page and
Northeast Georgia Historical and Genealogical Society
by Rebecca Homan on the Hall County page. (Rebecca was the former cc and she
just emails the pages to me for upload when there is a change). These pages
don't necessarily want a genweb logo although they carry a statement "hosted
by Forsyth Genweb" and "hosted by Hall Genweb"
The rule was - "you may host - keep it separate"
Which this issue is not addressed in the new rules. It may be a Rootsweb
rule.
I have solved the problem for Forsyth by getting separate server space for
the society. It has been partially moved and I am in the process of removing
it from the Genweb linked space - not from the internet.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gafchs/
My Cemetery Book is on my server space
donnaparrish.com.
I will move my "Town of Cumming" book there also or put it on loan to the
Historical Society, Also the marriages.
Any of the material loaned by Annette Bramblett will have to go to the
Historical Society pages.
Much of the material on my pages was entrusted to me personally to disribute
freely where I saw fit. I will place this where I deem appropriate. The
other contributors I will contact. Any pages left on the site will carry
whatever logo is voted on.
One of the other issues that has not been addressed in this discussion is
using your genweb page to affliate with other projects.
The new rules say no.
Many of us have done this to increase traffic to our pages.
I have already unaffiliated mine and removed logos including the webring as
I was asked to do. Naturally any material that came thru those projects will
have to go with those new pages.
Webrings are not specifically mentioned and are apparently up to the RC.
Also at this time, if you haven't been paying attentionYahoo (geocities) is
doing away with ftp on free pages. I know some of the pages were there.
AND
if you have any links on your pages to Angelfire, for example "Family pages
associated with this county" the link will go to a 404 error unless it goes
to the index page of a directory.
Some people may think I am crazy or petty but apparently you don't
understand
that a rule is a rule and they may be enforced. Now is the time to be sure
you can live with them.
Rootweb, Angelfire, Yahoo, USGennet are all servers. They have their rules.
They can change without notice.
For example as far as Rootsweb is concerned,
the space occupied by Dawson County (my page) is in Keith Giddeon's name and
if I lost the password, I would have to get it from Keith. Anytime that
Keith
wants to lock me out all he has to do is change the password. That is why
nothing except what was specifically donated to Dawson Genweb resides
there.
Lumpkin County which used to be my page and which Dan so kindly took over
for
me is in my name. Watch out Dan :)
It is not that I didn't send in change for Lumpkin, apparently they changed
the rules.
Want to know what is your space on rootsweb?
go to password central and find out.
