Kim,
When I want to see the actual instructions the "Census Takers" were
given, I go to the following web-site and it lists the instructions for
each of the census years from 1850 through 1990.

Subject: [GAGEN] Census Info
Hello All!
Do any of you know of some good places to research the various years of
the
census? While I peck away at all the census transcriptions I have going
right now, I often wonder how the information was collected and what
instructions the census takers were given. Maybe some of you can answer
one
of the questions: In 1860 how exactly was "real estate value" and
"personal
estate value" determined?
I am also looking for a site that has definitions of 19th century
occupations...as pertains to the state of GA. I found this site:
www.hawkshome.net/docs/colonial_occupations.htm but it mostly lists
"earlier" occupations, but is a good reference site.
Any sites concerning the gathering of census info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kimberly Ryan Gandy
