1940 Census Enumeration Districts & ED Maps -
Beginning April 2, 2012 the images will be available for free online here:
http://1940census.archives.gov/
On the NARA site there is a feature to obtain the ED Maps for each county
but I haven't been able to access it correctly.
This site however is easy to use to save copies of the maps:
http://stevemorse.org/census/xml1940edmaps.html
Since the census is not indexed, anyone searching for family members will
need to know where they lived and having access to the list of ED's used and
the maps should help them in that search.
I downloaded the list of ED's for my counties from here:
http://stevemorse.org/census/unified.html
There is a tutorial on the 1940 census on his site that you or your
researchers might be interested in:
http://stevemorse.org/index.html
I know Debra Crosby has made some of the maps and ED information available
in the archives so maybe if you have specific questions, she could help us
find answers.
Some of the maps I downloaded for my counties will need extensive editing to
make them suitable for use on websites, so if you run into that with your
counties and want to add the maps to your site, please let me know. I'll do
what I can to help edit them for you.
Maybe some of the other people who work with graphics could volunteer to
help with that if needed and it could be completed faster! HINT - HINT!!!
