This whole problem is being caused by file association in windows. When you
installed your new FTP program it took over rights to open anything that
begins with ftp://ftp.domain.xxx . Since IE or Netscape still has
permissions to be the handler for things that begin with
http://ftp.domain.xxx it will still open them. Both IE and Netscape will
function as ftp programs but there support of ftp is limited. They don't
provide storage space for site associated passwords and things that a normal
ftp program takes as a normal part of doing business. When you installed
your ftp program the installer removed the permission for your browser to
function as the ftp client and pointed it at itself.

Tim, I have a question....maybe you can answer....when I go to any
rootsweb
ftp site to view files such as the Census project, the Archives....my
ftp
program automatically opens as if I am going to use the ftp program to
upload files...how to I set my ftp program not to open/become operative
when
I am using MS Explorer? The one I am using is Ftp Voyager which I
just
purchased...I have looked in the help files and can't seem to find an
explanation to why the program opens anytime that I am using MS Explorer
and
go to a page that has an ftp://ftp address....Gloria
