Don't all FTP programs try to open the fttp sites ??
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) CANNOT be opened as Hyper Text
(HTTP:), at least I have never been able to.
My FTP program asks if I want to open FTP links in the
program, if I choose "no" then I am unable to open it due to
either "timeout" or "site not found". By the same token, I
am unable to open http sites as ftp.

In doing links checks in Georgia and elsewhere I'm getting
timeout errors to files in the Archives -
ie:
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/coweta/census/1880/
mortcowe.txt
and sometimes - not found.
However, if I replace the ftp at the beginning with http:
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/coweta/census/1880/mortcowe.txt
the file comes up without a problem.
Is the Archives changing the way the files are addressed?
What should the correct URL be?
Tim
