BTW if any of you have any ideas about a strategy for attacking the kind of
brick wall which I mentioned in my earlier message I would be happy to hear
it. The real point here is how do you figure out of 3 names (at least) which
an individual has passed under for significant periods of his/her life which
start circa 160 years which one (if any) was a birth name. He operated
during the civil war as John Martin. It is unknown for how many years before
or after the war that he went by that name. He was operating as Thomas Noble
at the turn of the Century because that was the name my grandmother was
adopted under. I do have copies of the adoption documents. And by the time
of his death in the 1920's or so he is doing business and living in NYC as
Michael T.N. Burke. Unfortunately you will find a ton of Michael Burke's in
the New York area during the 1920's since it was an common Irish name. Agnes
Noble (his adopted daughter, my grandmother) was the daughter of one Annie
Glover who died at one of the New York hospital's of Hepatitis. Her
occupation was listed as Nurse so it would have been easily contracted as
either professional hazard or on the boat coming over. I have no idea which.
She was from Ireland.
BTW if there are any of you out there who live in the Atlanta North area who
are good at deciphering old - like 100+ year old hand writing I would be
interested in talking to you. I have a lot of problems figuring out the
loops and whirls in some of the old Spencerian script.
