Some of you may already know this because I'm usually the last one to find out about
tool that help us. Just in case you are not aware of it I will share it with you.
Our local library system pays $10,000 a year to subscribe to Galileo. One of the
databases available through Galileo is HeritageQuest Online. You probably already know
about Galileo, however, if you use the password supplied by the library there are many
more databases available.
For instance under the News/Facts folder there is the subject Genealogy, then
HeritageQuest. You can search Census, Books, Persi, Freedman's and Rev. War. If you
choose Census - Browse, all census images for all states for all years are available.
These images can be downloaded to Adobe for transcription if you desire.
If you select "Search" Census a more limited number of years are available,
however, you can search for individual names and it returns a list of all census pages
listing the name for that state and by clicking the name you can view the actual census
image.
You can Search old newspapers (limited to a few major papers) from a library computer but
not from home.
I haven't tried many of the other databases available but at one time I subscribed to
census records with
Ancestry.Com. The cost there has become prohibitive so I was
delighted to find the information available free.
Enjoy.
