Pat I have done two church cemeteries like this in Georgia and while doing them was
confronted by the minister/pastor only
to find out that they were happy and wanted a copy for the church records when I was
done. I was happy to oblige, put the records online and
as they had a copy for their church records for the first time, I would hope that
they have maintained and updated that list.
You never know until you try, but I do know some ministers/pastors are happy to have
the surveys done.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I will make one attempt to contact the church on
Tuesday, and then urge him to go forward. I admit that I never have gotten consent
from
anyone to do a cemetery transcription.
This church is not abandoned, but I think the minister probably handles two
churches, and
just does one service a week here. They do have a web site, though, and the cemetery
is
well maintained. It's one of the oldest congregations in Gwinnett County.
I've roamed around the cemetery, taking pictures, and never thought anything of it.

Pat,
I agree with the others. Start the survey, but if confronted, politely try to
explain
reason why he is there. Offer to give the church a copy of the
survey. Most
People are
very understanding.
As a matter of fact, our cemetery preservation group in Polk County, has even
cleaned up
an abandon "church" cemetery after months of trying to get
permission from the new
church. The old church was destroyed by a tornado and the new church was built on
the
other side of the county. Family members had contacted us and asked
for help, so
we did
have permission from descendants of the majority of the people buried
in the
cemetery.
No one ever objected to our work.
I would tell the boy to go for it if he was in my county.
