Hi Everyone......
Several of you have asked me to post the cemetery info that Keith Townson
<dtown33905(a)aol.com> recently sent to our GAFANNIN email list to our Fannin Co.,
GAGenWeb
site. I am sorry, but we cannot do so because it would violate the copyright held by
Mrs.
Helen Casada. Reason: it is presented in the same way that she published it.
.
There are several ways that we can present the tombstone data as a permanent record at
our
Fannin Co. GAGenWeb site:
1. assemble all known transcriptions alphabetically, like we did for Union Co. because
the actual tombstone data itself is not covered by a copyright, and add relationship data
& recent burials that all you submit. To date, our Union Co. database is so
completely
different by the addition of other information about each listing & recent burials
that
is has become a whole new 'work in progress' . It is protected by our
county's website
copyright.
2. expand what we currently have uploaded on many of our cemetery listings.....by
"all
those born before 1850" which constituted my own research, by adding those born
before
1860, etc.
3. have folks submit their surveys....which will be more up-to-date than what was
published 10 years ago.
The 4th way, is what Keith did....scan it into a text file & send it to the email list
as
a "lookup". This method may be merely copying Mrs. Casada's work. It's
a very, very fine
line. If you intend to use this helpful information, please remember to quote your
source
as:
Cemetery Inscriptions, Vol I-V
Fannin County, Georgia

I have seen this type of "sharing" on many county email lists; and so far, I
haven't heard
of any problems. Remember, you can use the search engines on any RootsWeb email list to
search by surname.
The efforts of those that publish cemetery data into county cemetery books is awesome and
deserves our respect. Those publications contain a great deal more than just tombstone
transcriptions and is well worth the $$ to purchase them. If you are interested in
purchasing the Fannin Co. books, contact Mrs. Casada at the above address. They are also
found at the Fannin Co. Public Library in Blue Ridge.
Several months ago, I learned that several Fannin Co. residents, in connection with the
local historical society, have performed new surveys of all the county's cemeteries.
I
have asked about sharing the transcription data with us but the answer was "No".
They
expect to be publishing their work in the near future. Usually, a portion of the
proceeds
go to the historical society, so you are helping a lot of people with their family
research. When I have more info on how you can purchase it, I'll let you know.
As your County Coordinator, it is my responsibility to see that our website is in keeping
with USGenWeb policies. Our USGenWeb Project has posted to it's website guidelines as
to
what constitutes copyright infringement at :
http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/copyright.html
If any of you own any of the 5 volumes of Cemetery Inscriptions and can offer lookups,
please let me know. I will be very happy to add your name & email addy to our county
website!!!!
Thanks for your continuing support,
Merry Christmas,
CAT
