There has been a lot of misinformation going around concerning the Rootsweb
and
Ancestory.com merger.
The facts are that Rootsweb and Ancestory have promised that Rootsweb will
continue as it has in the past with respect to the USGenWeb Project. The
only difference hinted at was improved service and more tools to assist
site hosts.
In speaking with Charles Merrin, the new Rootsweb General Manager, I was
assured that the sites of the USGenWeb Project would remain commercial free
ie no banners, that our files will continue to be freely available for the
public and there will be no cost whatsoever associated with sites of our
Project that choose to be hosted there. Files hosted there will continue
with the same copyright protection as they have held during the past. The
merger in no way changes our/your relationship with Rootsweb. Rootsweb is
just like any other hosting server. The choice remains yours as to where
you choose to have your site hosted.
If you have any questions or comments concerning this, please either
address them on the list or contact me privately.
