Hello David, Lynn, etc.
This is CAT and want to first say that I'm no geru about these things..but,
I have noticed something that concerns me about all the census image files
uploaded in many states, not just GA.
Links from many of the pages, including your emails about recent uploads,
point folks directly into the index files/directories. I have been under
the impression that this allows hackers into our files and is why we all
must use our main page's name as "index" to try and prevent this from
happening. All 'freepages" at Rootsweb must have the main page named
"index", so I assume that this logic is still correct.
I did not know that the freepages required index.html or index.htm. I use
that to keep anybody from looking at all my files, but I didn't think
about it being required. It is not required on the Rootsweb USGenWeb
sites.
The archives was set up to be an ftp directory. It was George Waller's
idea to have html TOCs, or table of contents. So George gets the blame for
that. LOL
ftp was around long before html. Anybody is free to link to any file in
the archives, they do not have to link to our html pages. Even
familydiscovery.com is linking to some of our files in the archives. I
moved some of them (forsyth, etc) in order to break their links and also
to get the marriage records in /vitals/marriages/ so they will be
counted correctly in the stats, instead of going into misc.

Is this true, or are my concerns unfounded?
I don't think Rootsweb is concerned, so I am not either.
All these census images are a wonderful tool, but extremely
cumbersome if
they don't have an index and such index is not directly correlated to the
way the image files are named and uploaded. It seems only logical that the
achives folks, census folks, and even the CC should only link to these files
from a HTML page. I appreciate the amount of time devoted to placing these
image files on-line and I hate for any of our work to be compromised just
for the sake of saving a few steps.
The census folks are always looking for folks to index the images.
Take at look at how Mary Love Berryman does it.
