Hi all!
I have recently been assisting someone with research on a family in the
Stewart County area and we now have a huge amount of family information that
I would like to include not only on my site but to be accessible through the
other two counties I coordinate (the family crosses over into those counties
too), and also to be able to have a link to give to other county
coordinators so they can direct their users to this information.
My problem is in trying to keep the information in one place without
creating a page that will take forever to scroll through. I don't think I
would want to make a basic text page, I think I would still like to keep the
site design there and at least, if I have to break it into several pages,
that the information is still easy to get to and easy to understand (lots of
children and possible children I need to list). I also want this to be easy
for me to update because there are new items coming in regularly that I
might want to include.
I think I would like to keep all of the family info centrally located at my
Stewart County site where there is already an existing page about a couple
of members of this family, and then anything that involves another county I
would like to make sure that I can link to it on my other county pages and
that I can provide a link to other county sites (with surnames included) so
if someone searches another county for that surname that they will get a
result to be able to access this information.
So does anyone know of an already-existing website or two (GenWeb or
otherwise) where someone compiled a lot of information like this but kept it
easy to understand and easy to navigate? I would love to see different ways
of handling this so I can figure out how to do it on my site. Currently, my
design is set up so that the information would end up filling the center
column and it would be way too much to have to scroll through. I am not sure
if I should make footnotes at the bottom, and if I do need to link to new
pages then how many pages I should limit it to so it won't kill me to try to
do updates on a regular basis.
I'd appreciate any help or suggestions anyone has! There may be
transcriptions of documents also coming with this that can be contributed to
the county archives as well.
Thank you,
Belinda Slocumb
