Check with the Superior Court office to see how far back they keep
records. Ditto with whatever office handles coroner's inquests (great
idea, Trish). These records may be at the courthouse or could have been
transferred to the Georgia Archives.
Check with the local newspaper (Georgetown or Cuthbert) or library to
see if they have back issues on microfilm or hard copies. Georgia
Newspaper Project at UGA has some Cuthbert newspapers, no Georgetown. I
got some hits in newspapers on
Genealogybank.com, but it's a pay service
(probably has a trial membership). The murder and trial might even have
been covered in some of the larger town newspapers, like Albany.
The Southwest Georgia Genealogical Society covers this area --
http://www.swggs.org. The group has a Facebook page. Might be a good
place for information.

Thanks for Your help!!
Hi there,
I
am visiting Georgia soon and am hoping you can help me with some
advice. My grandfather was murdered in 1940 in Quitman County (I know
you haven't adopted Quitman, but was hoping since you are in close
proximity you could offer advice.) ; I have his death certificate which
clearly states he was murdered, but I am interested in knowing the
official version of the circumstances. ( I have the family version,
what little there is). Would I go to the County Courthouse to see if
there were any charges filed, or to the library to look at old
newspapers? ( I haven't been able to find any newspaper resource
available online).
If you have time, thank you in advance for pointing me in the right direction.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Jenkins Davis
(grandfather was William Howard Jenkins).
