The Wiregrass Farmer and Stockman 1939
SINCE MA HAS UPPED HER HAIR
Our Ma is pretty sensible,
For style she don't much care;
That's why it kinda floored us
To see she'd "upped" her hair.
She went to town with Pa one day-
He thought he'd get a shave-
And Ma said she believed she'd go
And get a finger wave.
For making people over
That stylist had a flair;
She thought Ma'd look yers younger
If she would "up" her hair.
Ma told her to hop to it,
She afterward confessed
She thought "folks owed it to themselves
To Always look their best."
She pulled Ma's hair up high in front
And made a heap of curls,
She said that Ma looked younger
Than lots of high school girls.
It didn't look so bad in front,
But I am far too kind-
I wouldn't even tell my Ma
What it looked like behind.
The baby didn't know her,
He won't sit near her chair,
And Pa has had to feed him
Since Ma has "upped" her hair.
Pa took her to the show one night
And did the gossips stare!
They told our next door neighbor
Pa had a stranger there!
When Pa heard that, he got so mad
You should have heard him r'ar.
He says that he won't shave again
'Till Ma lets down her hair.
