Just a brief note to the list. I don't know if Orin Hatch's proposal to set aside
October as National Family History month was mailed to this list or not but I know it was
to many of the Genealogical List. Anyway I just thought that some of you might like to
know that a few letters from constituents does still work as a tool. Below is Max Cleland
- Senator from Georgia responding in support of the resolution. I am not a Max Cleland
supporter but I feel this time he acted in our best interest.

Dear William F.:
Thank you for your correspondence regarding the proposed Senate Resolution
for Family History Month..
Within the last month some 14,167,329 people researched their family history
and 24 million people have used the Web and email to locate or hunt for family
or friends with whom they had lost touch. Researching ancestry is a very
important component of self identity and can lead to long-sought-after family
reunions or life saving stories. Approximately sixty percent of Americans have
expressed an interest in tracing their family history. At present there are
some 2,500 genealogical societies in the United States that represent
approximately a million people who belong to these groups.
With this in mind, you will be pleased to know that I am a co-sponsor of the
Family History Month Resolution, which designates the month of October as
"Family History Month" and requests that the President issue a proclamation
calling on all Americans to observe the month with appropriate ceremonies and
activities. There is no doubt that the study of family history is growing in
popularity and is an important tool in researching ethnic identity and genetic
health concerns.
Thank you for your correspondence.
Most respectfully,
Max Cleland
United States Senator
