I think the copyright issue has been sufficiently flogged to death. Obviously the version
printed in the local newspaper is theirs but if the information comes from the funeral
home to you and they are ok with it then you can post it.
I am a member of the NYC-list which is very large and very active(probably 50 post per
day). Periodically someone there complains about posting current obits because they
don't feel like they are genealogical in nature. We all need to be aware that just
because we may be working on relationships in the 1800's or 1700's doesn't
mean that there are people on the list looking for contemporary family. Lots of folks move
out of an area and become "lost" to their living families. The posting of obits
from another area or even the local area is proper on a genealogy board if the people whom
the obit is about originated in that area. Anyone who doesn't want to read them is
free to hit the "delete" key.
