Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thanks for the warm welcome! I am looking forward to working with Mike
and helping the Fulton County site to grow.

Hi all,
I have just placed several issues (gen. extractions) of a newspaper
online for Wilkes County.
There are items of interest to other counties in these pages. This is
just an FYI for those CCs (especially, Oglethorpe and Elbert Cos.)

I have sent this person an apology. I had never received emails like
this in the past and simply assumed it was something of a political
nature.
I certainly don't mind answering queries, but I do expect a person to
look on the site first. Wilkes Co. now has over 400 pages of data,
covering almost every type of record. (I put all of this info online,
and I'm still finding kernels of data for my research, lol.)

I'd like to thank everyone who voted in the Runoffs for the National
Elections this year. Thank you for all of your support during the
regular election and the runoffs. I hope you will continue to keep me
informed of your opinions on matters that come before the Advisory Board
in the coming year.
Congratulations to our Jan Cortez and David Morgan for winning in their
runoffs also! I look forward to working with each of you on AB.

Linda,
Larkin is a given and surname that is generally around some of these
families that migrated into NE Georgia. I do not know if it is around the
BARNETTS or not. I also know LARKIN is a Spots name and there were a lot of
folks from that area of VA that came into Wilkes, Oglethorpe, etc. so I
would generally expect it to be found in this general area of GA.
I guess the thing that got me in one of the previous posts was the
comment by one subscriber about their having researched the name submitted
in the query and found no mention of that name in their county, so they did
not post the query. I am sorry, but no one has issued me my halo, yet.
Should I expect one? I also thought we were here to help folks, even if
they sometimes ask dumb questions or even post queries that do not make any
sense to us.
The reason I said some folks need to "get a life" in a previous post is
because a mailing list is not for kudos and all of the other non-essential
stuff I have seen published almost daily on this list. Take for example
when someone designs a new GA GenWeb logo and for the next few days I see
over 100 messages posted to the list thanking them for that new logo. Do
that, privately.
As an example, since I joined this list in June there have been almost
1300 messages to this list, while the GA ROOTS list has less than 100
messages in the same time frame. I know there is a lot of new folks on this
list and like with any new toy, some want to beat their new toy to death,
but let's keep it business like.
If this were one of my lists, some of you would have already gotten a
stern note from me about some of the stuff I seen posted on this list,
because I thought this list was for essential and pertinent stuff needed by
county coordinators for the GA GenWeb. However, it is not for me to tell
anyone how they should conduct themselves on any list and what content is
permissible and what is not, that is for the LA.
What these unnecessary posts are doing is "loosing the audience" because
after a while many will do as I do, delete any and all posts from this list
without even reading them.

You know what, it's their fault for not being clear in their sender ID and subject line.
I'm sure I've deleted a lot of legitimate communication, too, but after two devastating
viruses and a spyware attack, not to mention porn and spam, when in doubt, I *delete*. I
don't spend one minute second guessing myself, either.

I, too, have received a couple emails from this DALTON and I remember it was about a Larkin Barnett & there were Barnetts in Elbert/Wilkes/Oglethorpe but I saw no Larkin in anything I had. I did refer the person to an excellent Barnett researcher who would have responded had he been contacted. The 2d email gave no indication they had made the contact so I repeated what I had previously said - nothing else has been received

Hi,
I received two queries for the Morgan County website from this DALTON
boy and after the first was posted I received an additional reply from him
including other information about his family, which I included with his
original query. I think this person is legit but that is just a guess. The
reason I received the follow-up post is because I sent him a complimentary
post indicating his original query had been posted to the Morgan County
website.
I do not check out the authenticity of folks who post queries. If what
they post is BS, then I let others figure that out because folks generally
do not respond to queries that make no sense to them, do they? However, if
what they post I know to be incorrect, then I will generally advise them and
ask them to correct their query but I do not know every family in Morgan and
Jefferson County, GA.
One has to remember that a lot of folks do not know where their
ancestors lived so they often punt and post their queries in counties all
around where their ancestors lived in the hope they get a reply that will
make some sense to them. I understand this and I do not hold it against
them and my only hope is they receive some information that is beneficial to
them. I also understand a lot of them do not understand how to write a
query and a lot of them are new to computers, so I try to help them, as much
as possible.
I also think some of you folks need to get a life because I get almost
as many posts from this list as I do from all of my other lists,
combined.........

I have received a couple of lookup requests and also data submissions with
that same exact subject line and from different people. They all appeared
to be legitimate. I checked the county list selection chart, and if you
click on the CC link for any county the subject line of the email reads
"About your GAGenWeb site". I believe these are legitimate requests coming
from the county list page.
In the case of Keith's correspondent, this is probably just a case of a
"Newbie" who, due to lack of genealogical knowledge or whatever, is perhaps
asking for an unreasonable amount of assistance. I do simple quick lookups,
but in the case of excessive requests I usually give them a few quick
pointers on how to do the work themselves. I do this in very diplomatic
language so as not to offend. This seems to take care of the situation.

being kicked off of the mailing lists.
Thought to let others know about the new spam control.

I too have gotten 4 or 5 messages from this email address within the
last month or so. I put the first 3 or 4 together and posted a query on
my Henry County site and wrote the person back pointing them to it.
The most recent email was basically the same questions with more
grammatical & spelling errors in it...I am probably going to ignore it
also. I never received a response after posting the query and replying
to them so I am not sure what is going on.
Mine didn't mention Wilkes county though - just numerous others. Only
one of mine has come with a name of the sender on it.

Subject: [GAGEN] Possible Harrassment
Hi folks,
I keep getting email from a EDalton4(a)aol.com, originating from the
county selection list (the subject is: About your GAGenWeb site>)
The first time I did an extensive search for this person, yielding no
results to their query. The second time I did a quicker search also with
no results.
The third time I replied telling this person I had already searched for
them and that everything I had was on my Wilkes site.
The fourth time, ditto.
Now I have gotten another query from them.
This is notice that I am ignoring this person from now on. Enough is
enough. So if any complaints come in, there's my side of the story.

Just curious. Is the query exactly the same wording each time?

I have gotten several of those lately - with the subject line: About your
GaGenWeb site - but from a different email address and name.
