Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Hello to all Georgia CC's,
We are finally seeing a "touch of Spring" here in the mountains!
Just wanted to let you know I have received the March issue of the
USGenWeb News and if you don't receive yours in a day or two, please let
me know or go to this link and notify them you have not received it.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwelections/current.html
There is interesting information in the newsletter this month concerning
copyright legislation.
Another important item that is in the newsletter is the new election
committee procedures for registering voters. If you were a CC before 01
Feb 2004, then you were automatically registered to vote in our
elections. If you became a CC after this date, then you will have to
register with the election committee in order to participate in our
elections. Your participation is needed and appreciated!
Another item of note is news about the USGenWeb Bylaws Revision
Committee's work. The first draft of the proposed revisions is posted
here
http://home.mchsi.com/~sagitta56/
Your input is also needed on these revisions. This committee has a lot
of work under it's belt and continues to work on this process. In the
newsletter, it is asked that you respond to members of the committee or
to DISCUSS-L with any comments or suggestions.
Thanks! And remember I am your SEMA CC Representative on The USGenWeb
Project Advisory Board - if you ever have any concerns or questions,
please let me know!

The single most important thing I find - and look for - on any genealogical
website is a search engine. It is important to note: even if you put a search
engine on your site, many of them must be told to index the pages again after
you make changes, additions, etc.
Does anyone know of a soundex search engine online? I would love that on my
pages.

The GRC is working on the "requirements" for the County Pages. In addition
to "required", we hope to have some "ideas/suggestions" as well. Please
write your GRC reporter with your comments.
We need your input. Some of these are also on the required National
Guidelines. If they don't seem to be there, I've listed it as [?national]
So to start your thinking:
1)What is the most important thing to you about a County Page?
When you visit another county/another state, what do you look for first --
(we're thinking this might show what should be required)...
2)Out of these "required" items in the present Guidelines (below), are
there any which seems "not needed" or "too extreme" or should be "moved to
suggested not required". (to respond, just "copy and paste" and add your
comments)
National NEW guideline suggestion:
Section 2. USGenWeb web sites may show only a single project affiliation -
that of The USGenWeb Project. If a coordinator chooses also to host a
local, state or special topic site with another organization, it must have
a separate home or index page.
[How do you feel about this?]
16. Minimum GAGenWeb Requirements for County Sites.
A) - The GAGenWeb logo must be prominently displayed on the front page of
the Web site, and linked to http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/. [National logo]
B) - All pages on the Web site must be clearly identifiable as GAGenWeb.
[either by logo or notation]
C) - The main page of the county site must have a link to the GAGenWeb
County Selection Table: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/table.htm [National[
D) - Each county site's main page must include a basic history of the
county, or a clearly identifiable link to same. This history should include
the following: the parent county(ies) name(s); when the county was formed;
some of the cities and towns located within the county, identifying the
county seat. [? National]
E) - Each County Site on the main page must include links to the
surrounding GAGenWeb County sites. [?National]
F) - Each County Site must include information for Resource Contact
Addresses and Phone Numbers, i.e., Court House (Probate Judge, & Land
Record Office), Newspaper, Health Dept., Chamber of Commerce and the local
Genealogical Society, with internet links when available.
[National]
G) - Each county site's main page must prominently include the names and
email addresses of the County Coordinator and Regional Coordinator. The
inclusion of the State Coordinator and Asst. State Coordinator is optional.
[?National]
H) - Each county page must include a maintained "Last updated"
notification. [?National]
I) - Each county site must include one of the following ways for
researchers to query their county:
(i) - Maintain queries by having the CC receive the query and placing it on
the appropriate query page within the site.
(ii) - Utilize the various message boards available on the Web. Such as
Rootsweb:

K) - Each County Coordinator and Special Projects Coordinator is required
to keep a link to their county's section in GAGenWeb Archives. [?]
L) - Each County Site is encouraged to make available, surnames (submitted
to the county coordinator) and the corresponding surname researcher's
contact information.
[recommended]
M) - A copyright notice on each page is optional, but suggested.
N) - a CC or SPC must include (within a reasonable time commensurate with
the amount and format of the data) on their county or project site, any
data submitted by any transcriber that relates to their county or project,
with exceptions as noted in Section 13. [copyrighted ?]
9. USGenWeb Requirements and Guidelines.
All GAGenWeb county sites must meet the minimum requirements, for county

So to start your thinking:
1)What is the most important thing to you about a County Page?
When you visit another county/another state, what do you look for first -- (we're thinking this might show what should be required).
I am usually looking for a specific record when researching a site.
2)Out of these "required" items in the present Guidelines (below), are there any which seems "not needed" or "too extreme" or should be "moved to suggested not required". (to respond, just "copy and paste" and add your comments)
National NEW guideline suggestion:
Section 2. USGenWeb web sites may show only a single project affiliation - that of The USGenWeb Project. If a coordinator chooses also to host a local, state or special topic site with another organization, it must have a separate home or index page.
[How do you feel about this?] I hesitate to answer this one, but my personal
opinion is that there should be two separate pages for each project.
However, this is not a biggy for me.
16. Minimum GAGenWeb Requirements for County Sites.
A) - The GAGenWeb logo must be prominently displayed on the front page of the Web site, and linked to http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/. [National logo] Definitely!!
B) - All pages on the Web site must be clearly identifiable as GAGenWeb. [either by logo or notation] This one is also not a biggy for me, but I personally believe they should be.
C) - The main page of the county site must have a link to the GAGenWeb County Selection Table: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/table.htm [National[ Yes
D) - Each county site's main page must include a basic history of the county, or a clearly identifiable link to same. This history should include the following: the parent county(ies) name(s); when the county was formed; some of the cities and towns located within the county, identifying the county seat. [? National] Yes
E) - Each County Site on the main page must include links to the surrounding GAGenWeb County sites. [?National] This is very helpful and I believe should remain.
F) - Each County Site must include information for Resource Contact Addresses and Phone Numbers, i.e., Court House (Probate Judge, & Land Record Office), Newspaper, Health Dept., Chamber of Commerce and the local Genealogical Society, with internet links when available.
[National] Very, very helpful in my research!!
G) - Each county site's main page must prominently include the names and email addresses of the County Coordinator and Regional Coordinator. The inclusion of the State Coordinator and Asst. State Coordinator is optional. [?National] This is a given I would think!!!
H) - Each county page must include a maintained "Last updated" notification. [?National]
I have no problem with this one, but do not see where it should be a necessity.
I) - Each county site must include one of the following ways for researchers to query their county:
(i) - Maintain queries by having the CC receive the query and placing it on the appropriate query page within the site.
(ii) - Utilize the various message boards available on the Web. Such as Rootsweb: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa... .georgia.counties.COUNTYNAME or GenForum: http://genforum.genealogy.com/ga/COUNTYNAME/ Definitely
[National]
J) - Each county site's main page must include a link to the county's mailing list. [?National]
Definitely
K) - Each County Coordinator and Special Projects Coordinator is required to keep a link to their county's section in GAGenWeb Archives. [?] This would be very helpful to the the researcher and should probably be a requirement.
L) - Each County Site is encouraged to make available, surnames (submitted to the county coordinator) and the corresponding surname researcher's contact information.
[recommended] This is definitely a good idea, however, before releasing one's email address to the mailing list or on a county page, I would hope that permission would be necessary.
M) - A copyright notice on each page is optional, but suggested. Agreed.
N) - a CC or SPC must include (within a reasonable time commensurate with the amount and format of the data) on their county or project site, any data submitted by any transcriber that relates to their county or project, with exceptions as noted in Section 13. [copyrighted ?]
Definitely.
9. USGenWeb Requirements and Guidelines.
All GAGenWeb county sites must meet the minimum requirements, for county pages, of The USGenWeb Project listed at http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/countypage.html, and incorporated in section 16 of these guidelines. CCs must agree to follow current and future USGenWeb guidelines for county sites. All projects have requirements, ours should be no
different.

I don't know if you call it honoring or not, but the way I recognize the
contributors is by listing them all on one page like:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalton/Contacts.htmlhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~garichmo/Contacts.html
I inlcude their name, email addresses, then what "area" they contributed
to. One visitor mentioned that this was handy because when they made a
connection with another researcher, they could see at a glance each item
they had contributed. Several contributors mentioned that this was much
easier to change an address in one spot rather than remembering each
place to tell the webmaster to change it in.
I hope that makes sense. I am off to bed now--really, really am.

There is no key to happiness. The door is always open.
I don't know how many of you use email similar to earthlink or mindspring, but if you are downloading updated versions to fix problems,
remember to check your Settings once you have finished your download - you may not realize that the name may have defaulted to be set to the name your
account is setup under, or the way your telephone number is listed, or it may have nothing at all. This could cause people to delete
emails that you send before you realize what has happened.
Just thought I would share that since it happened to me, and all I did was download an update.

I think I'm right in saying that the Rootsweb Search Engines, that we used
to be able to use, no longer work.
I use "Free Find" on my pages, and really do like it.
http://www.freefind.com/
Also when I use the Search Box, I try to include the "other" search
possibilities, i.e. message boards, mailing lists, archives...since I think
some researchers aren't even aware of all the possibilities.

(about mid way down this page)
I think some of our newer CCs might be interested in hearing how others do
it, and what Search instruments they're using.

Someone found the page I was looking for!!
This one was done by Donna Parrish, and I always found it an easy to use
chart plus many of her links are extremely helpful in creating your pages.

This is the main "help" page for GAGenWeb --- it is linked at the bottom of
the Table of Counties.
I'm leaving sometime tomorrow to return a book I borrowed 5 years ago, to
put 2 Wisconsin county histories online. I borrowed the 1300 page book
from a cousin.
Since it is about 825 miles there, I'm going to spend 2 or 3 days there
before heading back.
I'm hoping to meet some of the folks I've chatted with the last few years
via email, plus visit the libraries or gen socs in the area, plus put
scenery to the mental picture I've had of the areas I've not seen before.
I'm stopping in Illinois to visit my brother for a couple of days on my
return trip.
I should be home sometime next Saturday evening.
In the interim, Brenda supplemented by Richard will watch over the project.

I've selected Barbara Smallwood Stock as the new GAGenWeb viewperson. She
is the host for Pike and Harris counties.
For those who volunteered, who were not selected, thanks for offering to
serve.
Again I wish to thank Connie for serving in this position. Best wishes to
you in your quest in West Virginia.

That should be lab(a)boone.net
Tim
Donna Parrish had created a nice chart for checking to see what needs to be
on the pages now.
Does anyone know if it is still available somewhere?
It was such a easy one to follow -- and I think it would be very helpful to
new CCs. You could see at a glance what was needed.

There's a discussion regarding the USGenWeb
Official logo and the possibility of holding a contest for a new design by
the Advisory Board.
See the Board-L list for the discussion:
