Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Seems after I sent my last note to the list, around 1 AM Wednesday that
mail from the list is not making it to me for the period - 1 AM to 8 AM.
I'm seeing references to mail, but not the original email.
Does anyone know if Rootsweb servers burped yesterday morning?
Pondering where mail went - no rejects, not in the spam filtered area -
seemingly lost in Cyberspace. I read an interesting article yesterday
that it is estimated that 40% of legitimate mail goes astray. Too bad it
isn't 40% of spam goes astray.

One email should not cause you to resign, it should be all that's needed
to inform you when something needs to be done. In my opinion, losing
your position, except for gross misconduct, seems anathema to a
volunteer organization.
People disagree, but unfortunately, many of us do not have the writing
skills to explicitly convey our thoughts as intended via email. I think
we all must have had times where what we thought was a funny remark, was
interpreted as an insult or worse. Being aware of this goes a long way
towards alleviating the problem, and I truly believe we all have the
future of the project as our main concern.
That said, from my understanding of this situation, there is a good bit
of bad blood due to past events. I cannot take sides in this dispute,
nor do I want to; being a newbie, I simply lack the perspective to give
a fair evaluation, especially from this distance. What I would like to
purpose, and I do not even know if this is feasible, is a "truce" of
sorts.
Why don't the various sides in this matter identify themselves, and give
a succinct summation of their point of view . Perhaps, a compromise or
even a lasting peace can be achieved based on these words, and these
words alone. I have, in the past, been directed to search the archives
and evaluate what has happened for myself. Frankly, I'd rather eat
cooked spinach without the benefit of feta cheese, then to wade through
all of that material. I suspect that there are some valid points to be
made by both sides (all three sides? All four??), and if a halt to the
running battle could be made, we could all be just exactly sure of what
needs to be done. If not, at least a clearly delineated set of
opinions would give the rest of us some food for thought.
As it now stands, I fear that many very good people may leave the
project just to avoid the unpleasantness. That would be tragic, but let
there be no mistake about it, what has been occurring on this list in
the last six months has been unpleasant. I am not placing blame, or
even criticizing the participants beyond saying that things seem too
intense. I understand that feelings have been hurt, and that sometimes
requires a response. I'm simply asking, is there a basis to be found
from which our common goals will allow us to move forward without such
acrimony?
Finally, I am not asking anyone to "give up" their position on any
matter. If anyone feels strongly about a subject, take a few minutes
and tell all of us what your position is, and what you think the
solution may be. Please be complete about it, even at the risk of being
long-winded. We all need to be aware that many folks, myself included,
are somewhat dismayed by what has been transpiring, and are mostly in
the dark about the issues.
All of you take care, life is awfully short.
Dave
Congratulations to Chuck Pierce for becoming the new CC for the Greene
County site. And to Tim for becoming the new CC for both Forsyth and
Troup Counties.
Donna - you know we are all sorry to see you leave the GAGenWeb. Your
knowledge of Georgia history and resources will be missed. You have
always been helpful and kind to others. I wish you well in all that you
do and hope that you regain your health and feel better than you have in
years!!
Linda Barton
Donna,
I am sorry we did not know about your surgery in advance, so we could keep
you in our prayers. Sure hope you have a speedy recovery.
I agree the project is losing a valuable asset in your resignation.
Whether we agree with 'all' the ideas another person has or not, I always
like to read the input of others. You have been so active in offering ideas
on every plan the project leaders have proposed or talked about. Your
knowledgeable input on many of the subjects that have been discussed here,
in the past months since I've been here, will be missed. You have helped
many of the CCs with your wisdom gained by your own experience over the
years. Including practical and legal issues.
It encouraged my heart that you and Tim have been able to work together even
when there have been differences of opinions. The fact that you are even now
continuing to do so, for the benefit of the GAGenWeb project, speaks volumes
about the true character of both of you. I applaud this. And know that your
years of hard work will continue to help and be a blessing to researchers
for many years to come.
You WILL be missed. I am so glad to know you have your precious family and
friends. Let them love and help you as you recover your strength...it will
be good for both of you. ;-)

What Tim has said is correct.
I do believe that he believes in placing
genealogy online for free use and will protect
what material I donate. I appreciate his agreeing
to be the new CC for Forsyth County.
I will continue to maintain the Historical
Society of Forsyth County records as long as they
want me to and I believe that Tim and I between
us with links back and forth can protect the
integrity of both groups and give the users of
the internet access to vast sources of material
on Forsyth County, GA. There is some material
also that I plan to place with Virginia for the
archives.
Frankly my heart attack made me very aware that I
want to spend more time with friends and family
than with my computer.

Take care of yourself, Donna. The project is losing a valuable asset.

Monday afternoon around 5:30 PM, Donna sent me a note informing to feel
free to pass along the Forsyth site for she was tired of it all, that life
is too short for all the bickering.
I replied to her last night expressing my sentiments to her that I was
sorry that we couldn't come to terms, that it was with a certain sadness
and not any sense of glee that this change is made.
She in turn said she would consider donation of material to the site, if I
took over as CC for Forsyth. To honor her request and in respect for what
she has contributed by her service to GAGenWeb, I will be doing just that.
Donna is graciously letting us to continue to link to her site for a few
days while a new page is created in a temporary housing until permanent
space can be acquired for the new site. To that end, Donna will remain
subscribed to this list until that transition is complete.
Tim
If you can pre-screen your email prior to downloading it to your computer,
I urge you to do so. In the last few days I've received email from known
correspondent's addresses, which in fact were spoofed to include an
executable file (.exe) which I suspect contained a virus or trojan horse -
neither of which would be friendly to a non-innoculated computer.

When folks write - informally, they may use words that may not be
technically correct, yet the intended receiver will most likely understand
what was meant.
That said - the business that the Council addresses is outlined
in our Guidelines -
"The GAGenWeb Council will be responsible for amending these guidelines;
settling issues brought before it by the SC; the approval of
state special projects; and assisting researchers and others who email
the Council directly."
The issues brought forth are mostly personal in nature - thus requiring
confidentiality. These mainly include discussion of compliance, asking
RCs if a visitor writes in with a complaint what the problem is with x
county - for going through an orderly process, if a visitor will not
directly complain to the CC, then they usually write either the RC or
myself regarding it.
Sometimes, but not always, we discuss potential candidates for a county -
ie has anyone ever heard of this person, do you have time to assist them,
etc. We seek the best fit we can find for a county - for it does no one
any good just to appoint a warm body, if they are going to have to be
replaced in a few months because they can't do the job, didn't understand
all that it involves or any other number of reasons that may arise.
Perhaps some folks think it fun to look at other folk's
dirty laundry - but most would rather their dirty laundry not be shown
in public.
>The council should not be a private club, but representatives who work for,
>and are accountable to, the membership.
The council is not a private club - we are about as diverse a group of folks
one would ever like to meet. I'm sure we range across the board politically,
socially, faith based and whatever other standard you can think of.
The RCs are not representatives who work for, nor are they accountable to the
membership.
The RCs are persons who have volunteered to assist the CCs in their
respective
regions by answering questions, helping them with design problems, directing
resources to them.
They assist the SC/ASC in administering the state by reviewing sites, making
suggestions to the CCs, seeking new hosts when current hosts leave.
As members of the Council - along with the SPC persons, they address items
as outlined by the Guidelines.
That is the way it currently stands.
The BRC has solicited input from the members as to changes the members would
like to see in our Guidelines. If changes are to be implemented the members
will have to let the committee know, else things will remain as they are.
Contrary to what some may believe, I am not against the members seeking
changes
in the organization of GAGenWeb.

If the gut feeling was that Margie is human, that she like the rest of us
makes mistakes, that she is passionate about what she believes to be the
truth then those feelings would I believe sum up the sentiments
expressed.
If the gut feeling was that the Council members aren't perfect then that
too would be correct. Try as we might, we are going to flub some things.
Try as we might, we may react first, without either all the facts or
examining the issue from different angles.

Galina was originally setup for CCs of Georgia and South Carolina, in 1996,
because in the early days of USGenWeb - the SC for Georgia and South Carolina
was the same person.
Instead of asking for seperate state lists, GALINA was created. At some
point,
I'm not sure when, GAGEN and GAGENWEB were asked for and created.

Goodness. I didn't get that at all--I think she probably would decline a
nomination if there were to an election cause she's a very busy gal. Just to be
sure, my comments below do not mean that I would like to be SC either. <g>
I was just hoping we are going to have some good discussions about our
GAGenWeb.
Connie thank you for what you do for us. You asked "Is there a need for the
Summary Reports to continue as they are? I am one of those that would like to
see it continue--it's better than nothing. I would rather a detailed report
though, or open up the list to us all.
You also asked"
"Would having the non-confidential items posted on the GAGEN or GALINA lists
rather than the Council list be beneficial?"
I don't see where GALINA should come into it at all. If it's about GAGenWeb,
then it should stay on this list or GAGenWeb (Council) open list. As I
understand it, the GALINA list also involves the Carolinas, & would be a bit
confusing to those on there.
