Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

I would suggest that it would have been in North

records but I believe Cherokee and Fulton both
have/had beryl deposits.

A couple of items dropped in my lap:
1 - anyone ever heard of a placename - Birle City, GA - perhaps early
1800's?
I haven't found anything - looked at the Carl Vinson site, postal history,
Google.
2 - report that the USGenWeb graphic at the top of the state page is 'cut
off', not loading correctly. Is anyone else experiencing that?

Rather than just dismiss the whole idea, why not suggest alternative wording?
Given the cloak & dagger, under the sheets treatment past CCs have suffered -
it is more than obvious that this does need to be dealt with. On the table
and fairly.
I suggest there be a website up (via password given to CCs) where County
sites in question are posted with the date of the SC's initial contact. That way
there is no question about what period of time was given a CC to correct
her/his website.
And perhaps it would be helpful if the reasons(s) the web page is on notice
be posted too. There have been times in the recent past when the CC was not
told why her pages were not in compliance. This should not happen again.
Also, "ample time" is in the eye of the beholder. If the CC has not posted
she/he is on holiday, x number or days/weeks need to be set. That number can
be extended; however, they cannot be shortened. Obviously if a CC is on
holiday, that time period must be taken into consideration and worked into the
notice.

I just heard from Jacki Jonas. She says that Isabel was very rude, what with
all of the rain and wind she dumped on them. She referred to Isabel as "bad
company".
She is doing well. She lost power about 4PM on Thursday. They have no
structural damage to the house (thank God!) and no one was hurt. She does
not miss TV. She does miss the internet.
Her pneumonia is only marginally better and actually got worse. She is well
on the road to recovery and thanks everyone for their kind thoughts and words.

I am sorry - I generally do not approve of sending virus alerts to the list and to any who are offended I apologize. That said this one is so diabolical I thought it merited the alert. There is a new (I think) virus called Swen.A that comes attached to an Email that looks very official and looks like it really comes from Microsoft. Most of the past ones that were of this nature were text only, this one however is an HTML version and has all of the Microsoft Logos and even has links that are real links back to the Microsoft sites. Almost anyone would assume it actually came from Microsoft. It is identified as being the cumulative security updates of the last Month from Microsoft. My antiviral software did not recognize it as being a virus until I pulled down the latest update from the software companies website. As soon as I did that it immediately recognized it as a virus.
Please if you have received this and not opened the attachment, do not open it. I have no idea what the virus does to a machine but with the lengths someone went to so that this would appear to be from a legitimate source. The only reason that I did not run it is every time there is a major attach Microsoft does send emails out saying that they would never send patches via email and I just did not believe that they picked this particular Friday to change their policy.

For those who thought that micro-dot was some invention relating to
computers in the late 20th century, please be advised that the technique
for such was invented much earlier in the form of book indexes.
I'm currently working through a couple of indexes for books for Georgia -
to place online on the state page - but it is tedious to say the least as
the type is medicene bottle small. Wearing graduated lens doesn't help
either, so my glasses go off and on as I read/type/peer from paper to
screen while trying to keep some semblance of quality.
At least I'm in the 'S' part now for one of them. Hope to have that index
up later this week, before doing the next one.
The first is mainly history, the second appears to be mainly bios.
The first from the mid 1850's, the second from about 20 years later.
Tim Stowell tstowell(a)chattanooga.net

I took the liberty of writing to the person who requested information regarding
the Chain Gangs and penal system in Worth County. And I advised her to order
the microfilmed copies of Worth County newspapers from the University of GA and
to also go to the LDS search engine and use the search engine for the
LDS/Library Catalog Index to find all Worth County Court records which have
been microfilmed and to make a list of the films pertaining to the years that
she would like to view. Those court records will provide a lot of information
about each person who was tried. Expecially the Criminal Court records. She can
also check with the State Records which have been microfilmed that might
pertain to the prison system. But it is very unlikely she will find unfavorable
reports from any law enforcement agency and many may not even have the old
records on hand. In entering information much was omitted in files to prevent
giving an unfavorable impression.....and much can be learned by piecing
together the bits and pieces which can be found in the court and newspapers of
those times. It was mostly free blacks and free persons of color who were
allowed to live when crimes were committed. Slaves seldom survived once they
were aprenhened and punished. The owners were either compensated or they had
offered a reward to kill the slaves and bring the bodies back for
indentification purposes but seldom when a slave was accused of commiting a
crime was he or she able to survive the punsishment. Chain Gangs were called
that for the prisoners were chained at the ankles one to another or both ankles
chained so the prisoner could not run. The Chain Gangs spang up after the end
of the American Civil War and they were a way of having cheap "slave" labor and
a way to replace the loss of slave labor in the south. Hope this will be of
help, Gloria

Have you considered having her contact the Worth County Sheriff's Office?
They may have some information. You may also direct her to the Georgia
Department of Corrections.
If you will invite her to contact me directly, I will make contact with a
friend who is on the Pardons and Paroles Board (and was formerly employed on
Corrections) and inquire as to whether Georgia has such records and where
they might be located for viewing.

Wondering if anyone can offer suggestions to this woman.........
Hello,
I wondered if you would be able to indicate where I could find out more
information about historical prison practices in Worth County, specifically Alfred,
in the late 1850s (approx. 1855-57). I am researching the use of African
American chain gangs in your county during the antebellum period and would welcome
any information you could provide on this issue, whether in the form of a web
address or historical study.
Thank you very much for your consideration.

Thanks for all of your help. I was just curious, seeing as how if you're site is for a genealogical/historical society, you could sell genealogy related materials, I wasn't sure if you could somehow offer it, whether onsite or off, from the county page.
The guidelines sound confusing though. Under 15a it is saying that you can sell a professionally bound and printed genealogy book... relating to your county, from your site. And if so, I am having these books printed and bound by a book publisher, so does this qualify or not?
The paragraph above says you can't sell anything period. Then it gives exceptions lettered a,b,c below, were you can sell.
Or does it mean that you can only link to sites that are selling these items that fall under the exceptions?
For instance I can't link to a site selling passenger lists from ports in New York, but if it has Glynn Co. passenger lists, and it meets with the a,b,c exceptions, I can link to it?
Also, does this mean that even if I created my own page off of the rootsweb server, I still couldn't link to it from one of my pages on the Glynn site, because I am in the GAGenWeb project?
And if not, can I say somewhere that I have these books, contact me for more information? And not mention anything about them being for sale?
I know I can create my own page [on my own paid for space] offering these items, no one can stop me from that, but can I provide a link from the Glynn site to this page?
I think the word "professionally" needs to be defined. Do they mean someone you pay to print and bind your books, like your local printing company, or do they mean Arcadia Publishers, or the Genealogical Publishing Company? Because, technically, I will be paying a professional to print and bind these books.
My understanding of this is that I, personally, cannot offer anything for sale that I have compiled, anywhere, period. Whether I link to my own offsite page or not, because I am a member of this project and I am not a book dealer.
Amy
Amy, your pages are outstanding and should be a great example for all CCs to
follow...and I am the last one who would put you down for anything you wanted
to do...and if anyone would be entitled to accept contributions it would be CCs
like yourself who put your all into your sites..... <smile> Gloria

Amy, it is in the bylaws and the guidelines that we can not sell anything on
our county pages. But we can do that on our own personal pages. There is
nothing wrong in making money back you have put out on things but it should not
be done on the USGenWeb Project/XXGenWeb Project pages. And I am all for
trying to help us to pay for additional films, books and photos but just agree
that it is not right to ask for money or to sell something on our county
pages. Though there are some who will disagree with the guidelines and bylaws
pertaining to money earned or to taking contributions. And all of us are
entitled to an opinion...but the bylaws and guidelines is what we have to abide
by...when it comes to our county pages. Gloria

I have a question, I know we are not supposed to sell things from our sites, but what if you are putting together a genealogy book or CD?
I have recently scanned the St. Mark's Episcopal Church Books [dating from 1867 to 1923] and I have typed them up and am putting them in book format and donating some to various libraries and the church.
However, I will need to sell some to pay for the donated ones. Can I advertise them on my county site, or do I need to make a personal web page off of rootsweb?
I also have the images of the city directories for 1890, 1892, 1896, 1898, 1901, 1905, 1908 & 1912 on CD that are available for $25 [for all of them] or $7 for each individual book if all are not needed. The pricing includes the cost of the CD, shipping, and of course, my labor.
Should I just say on the Glynn site that this stuff is available for purchase please email me or can I put up an "ad" per say, stating the cost and product description.
I have already put the 1890 city directory transcription online at my sight, at the archives, and on Distant Cousins. I will also be putting up a surname index for the church books on the Glynn site once I get the books ready to go. I am offering to do lookups in the books already, since I have the images of the pages.
Thanks.
