Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
A big Georgia welcome to Paul & Sue.
It sounds like your respective county sites will prosper from having
coordinators truly interested in the history of your counties and interested
in providing free genealogical research for the public.
Welcome aboard - there are a large number of great county coordinators in
GAGenWeb who are knowledgeable and willing to help so if either of you have
any questions or need some direction, just ask!
In addition, I am your representative on the Advisory Board of The USGenWeb
Project and will be happy to answer any questions you might have concerning
your rights as a County Coordinator.
Good Luck and I can't wait to see your contributions to GAGenWeb.

Folks,
I would like to welcome aboard Paul Parker as the new CC for Carroll County, Georgia. As you know we have not had a CC for Carroll County for several months so we are very happy to have Paul on Board. He resided in Carroll County for 33 years so he already knows a lot about the county. So everyone give him a hearty Georgia welcome

In other news the Rootsweb lists2 is back:
"Mail Lists:
2003-10-16
The mailing list server (LISTS2) that has been off-line for maintenance has
now been turned back on, and e-mail is being processed.
Mail will be processed from the queued mail concurrently with incoming
mail. This will mean that not all mail will arrive chronologically until
the backlog in the queue has been cleared. It will probably take the better
part of the day to get mail from the queues to processing and then
depending on the traffic to your ISP further time to get delivered.
We did have difficulties with a small number of lists that has meant that
these lists are not currently operational and will not be until we have
manually checked and fixed any outstanding issues. A list is not currently
available."
Addendum on that - from Andrew - listmaster:
* 77 lists are not operational and will need to be manually fixed,
though we still need to grab data from an older backup
* if you are upset/grumpy/narky/..., that is nice
* if you are an admin for one of the lists you can email me, however
I will be emailing you when I have further information.
* mail sent to these lists ends up in my mailbox <sigh>, it isn't
lost

The rest are 4 county lists in SD, MT, MO and ID and a bunch of surname lists.

Per Rootsweb:
Mail Lists:

One of our mailing lists servers (lists2) has been taken offline for
maintenance. Any unprocessed mail will be distributed after the server is
brought back online.
To find out if the list you are not receiving mail is on this server - after
you open a piece of mail from such a list select the blah, blah, blah function
of your email client -
and you should see something like this:

Thanks MK!
It is on the way to them now. This one didn't have any attachments. The
blatant soliciting to children made my hair stand on end when I read it.

Hi - the federal government's spam reporting email is: uce(a)ftc.gov
Also, if you send them iffy emails with a file attached, it will scan it and
send you an auto email to let you know if it is contaminated - only if it is
though!

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are
to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and
servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -- Theodore
Roosevelt
Good Morning All,
This is not actually GAGenWeb business, but someone here posted a couple of
abuse addresses a while back. I think MK gave us a government one. That is
one I'd really like for the message below.
I lost many addresses I had saved. A few weeks ago while trying to clean out
unknowns and unused mail addresses from my address book, I somehow fiddled
around and deleted from the Bs way on down to near the bottom of the
alphabet! Yikes, when I hit delete, Honey, they were GONE. Still don't know
how I did it.
I usually delete all spam unopened and unread. The subject line for some
reason, made me check to make sure it wasn't a genealogy related request. I
was appalled by what I read. I did NOT open it, only viewed it thru
properties. I am used to them offering me all kinds of stuff and making
promises of wonderful body improvements. However, this one is sinister to
me. When they start messin' with our children.... Well, I hope no young
girls would actually consider such a thing. We know from the sad news
reports tho, that some do. It may also be a way to get men to this web
address too, I suppose. Could even be a government agency, but since I don't
know...I'd like to report this one.
Sincerely,
Sharon

One of the last living links to the American Civil War passed away on 19
January 2003 in Blaine, Tennessee at the age of 93. She will be buried next
to her husband in the New Corinth Church cemetery in Blaine. The last
veteran of the war died in 1950.
In 1927, 18 year old Gertrude Grubb married 81 year old John Janeway after a
three year courtship, her parents would not allow him to marry her at the
age of 15. Ten years later John passed away at the age of 91.
As a widow of a veteran, Jane has been receiving a check for $70 every month
from the Veterans Administration, since John Janeway's death in 1937.
John joined the army at the age of 18 after a chance encounter with some
Union soldiers engaged in battle. He changed his last name to "January" so
that his parents would not come looking for him. The pension checks came to
Gertrude with the last name of January.
Gertrude passed away in the three room log cabin in Blaine, Tennessee that
she and her husband lived in since the beginning of their marriage.
Electricity was just installed a few years ago.
Alberta Martin, 95, of Alabama is now the only surviving widow of a Civil
War Veteran.
Hope this helps.
