Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Donna,
These are not "mine" they are rootsweb's, I've just adjusted them a bit so
that they
can be used for our county page links,, hoping I haven't violated any
copyrights on
their images. I added a couple more variations and anyone is welcome to use
them.
If you want me to add a county name just email me and I'll be happy to do
it!

I apologize for the blank email.
I have a different mouse connected and I have not got it adjusted. My old one
died about noon today and was laid to rest with much greiving on my part as
I hunted thru my spare parts box for one that would work until Monday.
Anyway Debra, I borrowed one of your logos for my Hall County Queries page

Those will work nicely, Debra.
Virginia, I will be glad to add Upson County to one for you if you will tell
me which one.
What other counties do you need?

Debra,
Your graphics look very nice.
Maybe you could make a blank without the county name for those of us who are
not as good at graphics, but can add text to a blank
or just want to load it one place and code it to come in on several
different pages.

There is an even better way - which I use on the state site. As you may
know there
are several places on the State site where county URLs are mentioned:
county selection table
quick links
regional pages
To keep from having to change the URL on each page every time a county URL
changes,
I just change it one place and since all the links for each of the above
point to the
same place - the special directory I have - URLs are automagically updated
just by
changing it one place.
Consequently, I've set up my neighbors section of Coweta to point to this
same area
and so with this change not only are any changes incorporated at the state
level but
also on the Coweta County site that points to this same area.
So by now you are saying to yourself, that's all well and good Tim, where's
the code?
I can say that this works for all counties no matter where they are hosted,
if refered
to from a county hosted on Rootsweb. What I cannot say, is if it works if
refered to from
a county not located on Rootsweb.
For Coweta's link to Carroll County - one of its neighbors -
<!--#include virtual="/~gagenweb/URL/carroll.url"-->Carroll County</A>
All one needs to do is change the name of the county to the county one
wishes to
reference (carroll.url) to (countyname.url) and obviously the part
-->Carroll County</a>
to -->county name County</a> up to the first eight letters of whatever
county name is being
referenced.
The file carroll.url contains the actual URL for Carroll County. I
maintain all URLs for
ALL Georgia counties in this one central place - one change there
immediately updates
all references to it.
Hope this will be of help to some of you. If you have further questions on
this, please
let me know.
Tim
Bettie was good enough to send me the logo. for the Rootsweb boards...
but it is rather dull.....black and white....
Has anyone done anything with this one to make it "stand out" a little more....
I thought maybe a RED border or something around it??? I'm not good at
this graphics stuff....so wanted to see what others might have done....

I was talking about my first reaction Virginia.
By the way, have you found someone to take the
Georgia Genweb Links and Information
page yet.
Donna
I know that everyone will join me in saying a big "thank you" to Donna
Parrish for all of her hard work in keeping the GA Links and Information
page updated over the past years.
She really has done a fine job...and I have used this page so many, many
times when I'm looking for some link that I need.
We all know how many times links change.... and ideally this page was to be
used on our County Pages as a "master Linking page"....so that we wouldn't
need to worry about all those links that go missing.....
So it has been a big job.... thank you so very much, Donna for this
contribution to GAGenWeb through the years.
Virginia Crilley
Is there a logo for us to use for the Query Boards ---
Ancestry/Rootsweb or Gen Forum either one....
I like a small logo because I think this is easy to spot on a page. I've
still be using just one "puzzle" piece....
Virginia Crilley
I don't want to belabor the point ....but did want to be sure that people
knew that the Guideline which was voted on and passed said:
"All pages on the Web site must be clearly identifiable as GAGenWeb"
The wording was changed specifically because of the questions raised about
the logo having to be on every page. The logo does not have to be on every
page.....but every page, must have some words or something that clearly
shows that it is a GAGenWeb page....
I believe that most of us already had that in some form or another.....and
would want to have it just so people would know where they were as they
went from link to link.

I read it that you register to get a code(a URL) and the code is used
instead of their email address so that they can change their email whenever
they want but that their code stays the same.
It is not mandatory.
It would not work on the mail lists.
Rootsweb message boards can be changed universally.
I can see where it would be great on surname boards, queries and submitted
material because some people change their email frequently. However, I will
only change their email to a code if they submit it as I would any other
email change. I am not going to hunt them (I maintain surname pages on all 5
of my genweb sites.).
As far as preventing harvesting - I doubt it.
I do think it will cut down on the amount of replies people would get as it
would require an extra click on the part of the users.
I do not intend to advertise it until I get all my web pages in compliance.
How you are feeling now is how I felt at the idea of putting a genweb logo on
every page I had built over a period of years. Frustrated.
Brenda Pierce (an RC) came up with a shortcut to handling links to
neighboring counties. On her Fulton page, she has a link called neighbors
which takes you to a page where they are listed but if you click on any of
them it takes you to the county selection list.
That saves keeping up with their links. I intend to keep mine the old way but
it is a shortcut.
I saved myself hours of work on the logos by removing almost everything I had
ever personally submitted to my own domain or to that of the Historical
Society and just linking them. That way I do not have to edit each page
unless I want to and until I am able.
Donna
Something you may find of value:
Nancy Trice and Leigh Compton have created this little tool:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/
for submitters to use.

If in your coding your link doesn't work or your picture doesn't show this
might be the problem
URL=file:///C:/anyfile
IMG SRC="file:///C:/anygif
This coding sends the computer to the viewers C drive.
The person who uploaded it can see it because it is on their hard drive but
no one else can
How can you check?
With IE
Go to your page on the web
Right click
Click view source it will open your code in notepad
Click on search
Click on Find
Type in C: and Click find next
There were at least 3 examples of this on Genweb pages I went to this morning.
If you go to the trouble of building a page, I know you want people to be
able to see it the way you built it.
