Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Subject: New list for USGenWeb Members
A new "ALL" list is now available for members of, and contributors to, the
USGenWeb Project, and Projects that are a part of the USGenWeb. The list is so
Members can get to know each other, and for the general discussion of the
USGenWeb. An optional Chat Room comes with the list, and if it is used it will
be upgraded to a more fancy version.
The new list is hosted, supported, and sponsored by Members of the Project.
The list Guidelines were developed by Members and the Admins of the list are
Members. The list is not sponsored by RootsWeb or the USGenWeb Advisory Board.
It's expected to take a week or so before the word spreads, and the initial
batch of members subscribe.
To subscribe send a email to: all-request(a)usgenweb.us
with the SUBJECT of the email being: subscribe
For more information, see the List Info page at:
http://server708.rackmonster.com/mailman/listinfo/all_usgenweb.us
Daryl - dlytton(a)mindspring.com
PS: You are not on a mailing list. I am not one of the list Admins, this is a
one-time emailing from one USGenWeb Member to another. If you receive more
than one copy, you are probably using the USGenWeb with more than one email
addy.
The problem with trying to find out from the headers with some of the newer
"nasties" out there klez is an example, it can spoof both the from AND to fields
and alters the subject line.
You can sometimes get results by forwarding suspicious headers to the abuse
addresses ISPs involved. Tho not all are cooperative. Here is a link that might
help http://www.abuse.net/
I too have received these things every time I've ever posted to this list. I
know they aren't coming 'from' the list, but from someone in someone's email
address book. Once I almost opened one thinking it was from my RC, but when I
looked a second time at the screen name, it was written differently, both names
together with no space. When I looked at properties, sure enuf it was a "nasty"
but I know it didn't come from him. It was spoofed. Now, some people DO have
email programs that allow them to make it look as someone else sent something, I
don't want to think that of anyone here. I pray things haven't gotten THAT bad.
It is very important to pay attention to the file size of what is received, some
don't even show an attachment.
I get them on a regular basis that spoof the postmaster, and failed mail, and
returned mail, all those things we as listmanagers receive.
Stay safe all.
Sharon
Gloria, I have received that one FROM me TO me. I have received bounces
saying that the post containing it bounced and that I sent it. I use a
good anti-virus program, and the headers indicate that the original sender
was NOT me, but it takes a good bit of detective work to find out where it
came from - and sometimes there is no way to tell the originating sender -
but you can, with good detective work, find out who it is NOT from, so
hopefully your friend will be able to at least rest your mind that it was
not done deliberately by anyone you know.
FWIW - I have been on computers for many years and would have no idea how
to send a virus to anyone without taking a chance of getting infected
myself - and I seriously doubt that anyone we post with in Georgia would
take such a chance - or be that malicious - no matter how "politically
upset" they were at you. Getting po'd at you because you don't agree with
them is NOT the same thing as wanting to hurt you or your computer - you
know that.

Tina, not to the list but to John and I at our personal email address that John uses. What the person sent was an email with an attachment of Kleenz .E. Our virus protection deleted the harmful part of the email. But what I have been told is that someone who is very good with pcs can deliberately send out this to someone.

Tina,
She is not saying that anyone sent a virus to the list. But it would not matter if someone did send a virus to the list. The Rootsweb mailing lists do not receive and/or distribute attachments, so a virus cannot be distributed to the list.
However, a person on the mailing list that has an infected PC, can unintentionally have a virus forwarded to addresses in their address book (who frequently are other list members). The message with the virus attached may use the address of the infected PC as the sender, or it may use the address of someone else in the address book of the infected PC. So it may appear that people on the list are sending viruses to other people on the list. This is exactly what many of the viruses are trying to make you think.
I receive viruses every day, and my anti-virus software catches them. Many of them appear to be from people I know on the Rootsweb mailing lists. I don't even bother to try and figure out if the person actually sent it or not. It's a waste of time because the virus may not even have come from the person it says it was sent from, and even if it did, they are definitely unaware that the message was even sent. When my anti-virus software catches the virus, I just delete it and feel happy that my software is doing its job.
If someone really wants to track down exactly where a virus came from, they need to learn exactly how the virus is designed to work, then do extensive investigation, before making any accusations.

For god's sake. The very being of a virus is that it usually attacks the
person's address book and sends out an email to everyone in it - that is why
it is called a virus - unsuspectingly infecting others.
This was very cruel attack on someone's character - accusing him/her of
sending out a virus laden email. I think you should apologize immediately.

Are you sure it wasn't a forged email with a virus.
Every time I posted to the list with my other address, I received at least 4
emails with a virus attached. That is why I had to change my mail set up.
The first one I got said it was from Tim. Some say from Brenda Pierce. I
have had them with at least ten other CC's name on them. I even had 3 that
said they were from me.
Check your headers very closely before you place the blame.
I have my mail set now where it cannot send or receive attachments.

We expanded it and have a friend coming over this evening who may be able to trace it back to the person who sent it. This is something that was sent to us at an address that is listed on no genealogy board and has no persons from the genealogy community in the address book nor did any of the persons on this list with the exception of one have this address. Oh and one other and she did not send it. These persons only had contact with this address within the last two days and therefore it only could have came from one of two sources as this address is brandnot used for anything to do with genealogy. The email was from a source which definately pertains to genealogy.

Since the beginning stages of GAGenWeb Project people have come and gone while others stayed. There have been arguements and disagreements on the list and not often was anyone unsubbed because of anything malicious that they did. We all have our opinions and sometimes disagree with one another but to deliberately send a virus to a member of this list in an attempt to infect their pc is very low and unacceptable. John and I know who you are and will take steps to see to it this is not tolerated on this list or any other in the GAGenWeb. Enough is enough. Thank goodness we have virus protection which deleted the harmful part of the email but your doing this is not called for.

What you do is instead of linking each separate county, you just make one
link "Neighboring Counties" and send them to the state selection table.
You see, I had a problem with this and had been linking individual counties.
Brenda showed me this was foolish and wastes time, so I have changed my pages
to the one link method. Now as long as Tim keeps all his links up, we don't
have to.
Donna
I am gonna change mine, too! That will be much better. I thought mine
were current but found that they were not. I remember working on them
within the past month or two and must have either forgotten to upload the
new page or maybe it changed in the meanwhile - but linking to the counties
page will be much better!
