Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
When you sign up with QEXPRESS, you will be asked to
fill out some options of how you want QEXPRESS to
handle your queries.
REMEMBER: This is how to get to QEXPRESS page to
sign up and get it going:
http://qexpress.rootsweb.com/index.html
Most of the questions are self-explanatory.
These--- I will explain:
One option you will be asked during the registration
process for QEXPRESS is:
Query Submission Return Page:
This is the URL of the page you want your visitors to
see after filling out the query form. The page usually
has a 'thank you' message and links back into the
site. (You will be sent a sample 'thank you' page
after you register. You can use the sample page, or
create an original one.)
Note: Do include the "http://".
This might be http://rootsweb.com/~ga______
the blank indicates your county, followed by a slash
and then a file called "thanks.htm". You will want to
"thank" the poster of the query and also provide a
link to get back to your main page. QEXPRESS after
you signup will send you a sample THANK YOU page
(html).
Next Question:
Mail query to site manager: "in text format"
Be sure to choose "in text format"
This is what you want. For then you will be able to
cut and paste their text query from the email onto
your QUERY.HTM page. Now I break out my queries by
the YEAR... 2001, 2002, etc.
Next Question:
Post query to temporary Web page: NO
Be sure to use NO for this answer to this prompt
Next question:
Post query to mailing list (optional): LEAVE IT BLANK
LEAVE IT BLANK. You probably do NOT wanna do that.
You can always change it later. But K.I.S.S. for now.
That means, Keep It Simple Sweetie.
Those are the only ones that I know that will trip you
up. Remember to save your password somewhere so that
you can get back into QEXPRESS if you ever need to to
make changes.
You will initially be sent the HTML file(s).
They contain the "html code" for putting the query
form onto your website. You will have to supply the
links to GET TO that page for your visitors to your
site.
Remember to create you a THANKS.HTM file too.
QEXPRESS will send that code too.
Get the QUERY thingy working first before you hop over
and sign up with FREEFIND to do searches on your
website.
Read, read, read, read, study, and follow the
instructions.

I think what we seem to have forgotten, is that we have a huge need for
scaleable servers, it is expensive. Many of us were sponsors and remember
sending in our dollars.
I don't think that Ancestry.com is going to start charging us for Server
space. They have long had a policy of free databases, which was in effect
from their inception until their sponsoring our Rootsweb servers. Once they
started sponsoring Rootsweb, they changed their method of "sponsorship" from
free databases to sponsoring the Rootsweb servers.
I have no attachment to Ancestry.com, but I feel we could all benefit from
an element of calmness. By the way, I believe Cyndi's list has been on
Rootsweb Servers from sometime.

Hi folks!
My mailbox has been absolutely flooded with emails
requesting assistance with the QEXPRESS that I
mentioned in an earlier email.
Please go to:
http://qexpress.rootsweb.com/index.html
and read, read, read the instructions there. It takes
some reading, studying, and then testing and trying to
make this work.
QEXPRESS is not new. This stuff has been around for a
while. I've been using it for over a year.
I use it in its simplest form: I have a FORM on one
of my pages where a searcher fills in what they are
looking for. QEXPRESS then sends me an email with
whatever the searcher put into that form from my web
page. I then copy and paste those emails (once a
week) over into my query HTML files on my site.
That's that part of it.
I wanted to be able to have people SEARCH my entire
site, so I went to http://www.freefind.com and signed
up with them for their FREE search service. This
service has nothing to do with ROOTSWEB. I signed up
with them and placed their code on my web page and now
folks can search for any WORD or SURNAME on my
website. You can set up FREEFIND to index all of your
web pages once a week of you like. That's what I do.
Back to QEXPRESS: when you sign up with QEXPRESS you
will be emailed 2 HTML snippets of code that you must
place on pages on your website. You cannot make
QEXPRESS work until you have signed up, been accepted,
and have the HTML code fixed onto your web page(s).
Then and only then can you TEST to see if the query
you put in will arrive in your mail box.
Once that is working, you could then go to FREEFIND
and get set up with them and get the SEARCH feature
working on your web pages.
If you have little experience with HTML code, you may
not wanna fooll with this QEXPRESS and FREEFIND. You
gotta be comfortable with HTML coding.
Some of you have written asking about merging your
queries with the SURNAME HELPER. I don't use that
option. Never understood it; never got it to work.
But QEXPRESS and FREEFIND work for me. But it takes
patience, testing and trial and error to get it
working. Even I did not get it working the first time
around over a year ago, and I've been writing HTML for
over 6 years.
Keep working at it! You will eventually get it.
Thanks!!!

Has it always been this way??
Wonder what they do with the information you provide on

Hmph!!!
Maybe one day we will be able to take an annual census of the
world just by everyone signing in to some server somewhere.
Gotta love it!

Donna,
I agree about the Boards. It's a mess and I'll not use them. I hope to
have the option of Not doing queries. I'll be asking soon if no one else
does. This was probably a good idea at one time, as Cat pointed out, but
it's not necessary now since there are many more volunteers in the
Project.
I still have faith in Rootsweb, but not Ancestry. If it appears Rootsweb
begins/continues to disappear, I'll move my counties to my personal
domain.

Got a problem? Contact your RC or ASC at GAGENWEB-L(a)rootsweb.com
This is the URL if you are interested in adding, changing,
or whatever the way you handle queries on your web pages.
It is a script, but all YOU really have to do is signup for it,
paste the proper HTML on a page and Arrange it the way you
want it to look (You can actually steal my HTML code from the
Warren County page)...
In addition, if you plan to use this method QEXPRESS... you will
also want to visit http://www.freefind.com and sign up with them.
I have my web pages automatically INDEXED by their robot every
Sunday morning. I post all my new queries to the appropriate pages
on Saturday and then the robot INDEXES all my pages on Sun. a.m.
This way, any one coming to my Warren County page can search for
a SURNAME or a WORD and it will find every occurrence on all of my
county web pages and let the user do his/her research.
I like it and it works.
If you're needing any help getting it off and running, email me and I will
try to assist.

I, for one, would not want to discontinue maintaining queries.
I receive about 10-30 queries per week, and it is not a big maintenance
problem for me. Searchers post their query on my WARREN COUNTY
site and then the query is scooted to me via email (Qexpress). I then
copy and paste the queries over into the current year's HTML file and
post it on the web. Weekly, I have FREEFIND.COM to index my entire
site. Searchers then coming to my pages can enter a word or a surname
and be immediately given a list of matches. I get letters of praise from
folks all the time about how EASY it is to search my site and find items
they have been looking for.
Therefore, I am not interested in changing my method of operation on
my particular website.
If you would like to see it in operation, feel free to go to my website and

Again, I know this is a break in the current discussion, but we are currently
working on several censuses in Rabun County and I thought that other CCs
would be interested.
First, we are trying to reconstruct the 1820 census of Rabun County, which
was destroyed in a fire many moons ago. Most of the earliest settlers here
stayed only a few years before moving on to other areas of the state or
country. This project is still in the earliest stages, but can be viewed at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/census/1820.html
The 1830 and 1840 Censuses of Rabun County are now online, although they have
not yet been proofread. The easiest way to access them is to go to this URL
and scroll down to "Census Records":
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/rabun.htm
Finally, we are slowly but surely putting the 1850 Census of Rabun County
online, in table format. Thus far, about half of the census is online:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/census/1850/1850.html
I am particularly excited about the 1820 census, as very little is currently
known about the earliest population of Rabun County in general. As many of
you already know, Rabun County was created in 1819 from lands ceded by the
Cherokee, then deeded to participants in a land lottery. Most of the people
who drew lots never moved here, but chose to sell the land to land traders,
who in turn sold the land to settlers. Deed Book A (which we are currently
working on transcribing) mentions people from around the state. We hope to
have abstracts of that book online by the end of this year.
Sincerely,
Dawn Watson
CC/Rabun Co., GAGenWeb
http://www.rootsweb.com/~garabun/
I know this is a break from the current thread of discussion, but I thought
some of the other CCs would be interested in the following.
Thanks to Caleb G. Teffeteller, an index of all obituaries placed in the
Clayton Tribune (Clayton, Rabun Co., GA) from late 1991 to the present (June
2001) will soon be available online in the Rabun Co., GAGenWeb Archives.
Surnames A and B are already online and may be viewed at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/rabun.htm
Scroll down to "Obituaries" to view these files. Hopefully, the remainder of
the index will be available within the next couple of weeks, depending on how
long it takes to format the index.
This index mentions several surrounding towns, counties, and cemeteries,
including Metro Atlanta areas, Macon Co., NC, Towns Co., GA and Stephens Co.,
GA, to name a few.
Sincerely,
Dawn Watson

Although technically I am just an Asst. CC at the moment, but having been
around almost from the start, I think CAT has really come up with a keeper
this time.

With the advent of things that are now coming about, maybe it is time to
let the others take care of the queries. Would take a load off those who
would like to just link to these sites.
In the beginning there was no one doing the things that we were trying to
do. Now some seem to think they can do it better and make a profit while
they are at it. Not against a profit, just do not like to see the hard work
of so many taken and used other than the way they thought it was going to be.
>
>How can we go about asking USGenWeb to change maintaining queries to an

May not be a procedure in place. So... why don't we just ask the State
Coordinator and the Regional Coordinators to discuss this. Of course, I am
sure there are some issues that I have not considered. One being.... what
if these other guys decide to get out of the 'list' business? <g>
Time and things change. This is one of them. There is a need to look beyond
just the list matters and think about what happens when 'they' take the
whole nine yards over. What do we do then?
