Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I turned on some of my boards, but not the queries.
I am not sure if I am pleased with the gateway concept.
I feel that the double archiving is unnecessary.
Also, I am a little tired of searchers who are too lazy to go look.
I get a high play on my pages and have some really nice people, but someone
will ask a question and when I say it is linked from the page, they will say
oh I only look at the page once a month or so or I never go all the way to
the bottom of a page.
I really think that someone who is interested will actually go look at the
genconnect board, will use the surname helper, will search the archived mail
lists and read the page and/or follow the links on the page.
I will help people with technical questions as much as I can, I will refer
them to other sources when I can. If a CC won't use the Genconnect board
symbols, I will refer searchers to the resource page where they can find them
easily.
I don't use "new" markers anymore and I don't announce every change to the
page on the mail list. I also don't hide many of the tools available.
I think the most valuable tool would be the ability to edit the mail lists,
where we are archiving one sentence replies with a whole digest quoted at the
bottom.

I thought I'd help you all out by giving you some simplified step-by-step
help in accomplishing this process of SENDING YOUR GEN CONNECT MESSAGES
directly to YOUR COUNTY MAILING LIST.
This is NOT a Requirement, but since I forward all my Gen Connect Board
Messages to the County Lists so they will receive wider exposure, this is
a BIG time saver for me!
So I'm just adding to the instructions previously sent out to all of you
from Gen Connect itself.
> 1. The mailing list administrator needs to add
> 'gc-gateway(a)rootsweb.com' to their accept list.
A. Go to your Mailing List UTILITY PAGE.
http://lists.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listowner/gaupson/listutil.pl
(yours will look something like this.....ga?????? **just type in the name
of YOUR county)
**Note that YOUR utility page may be "lists2.rootsweb" or even
"lists3.rootsweb"....but you should have your Utility Page BOOKMARKED!
B. Near the Bottom (but BEFORE the Tagline heading)....you'll see a box to
type in YOUR PASSWORD. (type in your password)
Just below this is "Edit files". Click.
C. Screen has several boxes: Look for "Edit Accept List". Click.
You'll see a big box....which might be empty.
YOUR E-mail address (as list manager should definitely be there....so ADD
it if you haven't already).
THEN I just "copied"
gc-gateway(a)rootsweb.com
INTO the box to be sure I didn't make a typo.
Then SUBMIT.....
***This STEP must be done FIRST!****
> 2. The GenConnect Board administrator needs to activate the gateway,
>using
> the Change Page at
>http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/signup/change.html.
>
>IMPORTANT: If you activate the gateway but 'gc-gateway(a)rootsweb.com'
>hasn't
>been added to the mailing list accept list, then GenConnect will try
>to send
>posts to the mailing list, but they will be tagged "{not a
>subscriber}" and
>bounced to the list admin. This is important; you should *not* try to
>activate the gateway without first checking with the corresponding
>mailing
>list admin.
NOW, go to the Gen Connect Change form::
http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/signup/change.html
Here you'll need to type in at the end of the permanent URL:
USA/Ga/upson
**Important that you use Ga NOT GA
Then YOUR county
PASSWORD
This will take care of the QUERY BOARD for your county.
SUBMIT
This takes you to the Config Options page and you'll see a BRIGHT YELLOW BOX!
You can't miss it....and at the bottom, CHECK YES.
Then at the bottom of the PAGE....MAKE CHANGES. (Don't forget that step!)
You'll need to do this for ALL your Boards, if you want them all to go to
the Mailing List..
UpsonObits
UpsonBibl
UpsonDeed
UpsonPens
UpsonWill
**I found by using the top menu of the browser, and choosing "go to"....and
clicking "change form".....all I needed to do was change the "ending of the
URL"
change Bibl to Deed
The password remained from before....then MAKE CHANGES, and go through all
the steps.
=========
This may take you awhile, but in the long run it is a time saver, and I'm
delighted with it.
IF you have any questions, or need help....let me know, and I'll be glad to
walk you through it. This is a process you probably haven't used in a
while, so most of us have forgotten about WHERE these things are....so hope
my message will help you out!
