Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
In looking back at the previous program of selecting the county of the
month, it appears that the SC, Laura Cook, made the decision based on her
own criteria as to which county would be highlighted. In other words, I
find no previous criteria for the selection.
>From reading the comments made here in the last few days, it appears there
is support for this program. Since Georgia has so many counties and
previous counties (162) - a county of the month program with 1 county per
month would take 13 plus years even if every county only got selected once.
Therefore it appears that to spread the awards around in a more equitable
manner perhaps the state should be divided into regions - perhaps along our
regional coordinators lines of approximately 20 counties each.
I do like the idea of letting our visitors do the nominations though -
since they are our 'customers' and we should work to give them a pleasant
visit to our various sites.
I'll send some more stuff for your comments shortly.

Hi folks,
This site was mentioned today during the WWII Memorial Groundbreaking

It may be helpful for those of you who are veterans, or searching for

The information should be accessible for all of us. If it is not, it does
not matter how much great information is there.

Thank you very much CAT.
Donna
This past weekend I ran across some fascinating figures about the 1790
Georgia census. Two of the counties were spelled differently then than now:
Glyn - Glynn; Wilks - Wilkes.
The state was divided into three sections Lower, Middle and Upper for a
total of 11 counties.
The Lower section consisted of Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glyn and Liberty.
The Middle section consisted of Burke, Richmond and Washington.
The Upper section consisted of Franklin, Greene and Wilks.
The counts in the data I reviewed were divided into 5 catergories:
Males 16 and over, Males under 16, Females, All other Free Persons, Slaves.
The data below will be in that order, with a Total at the end.
Camden - 81 - 44 - 96 - 14 - 70 = 305
Chatham - 846 - 480 - 1130 - 112 - 8201 = 10769
Effingham - 627 - 336 - 711 - 0 - 750 = 2424
Glyn - 70 - 36 - 87 - 5 - 215 = 413
Liberty - 426 - 264 - 613 - 27 - 4025 = 5355
Burke - 1808 - 1841 - 3415 - 11 - 2392 = 9467
Richmond - 1894 - 1925 - 3343 - 39 - 4116 = 11317
Washington - 947 - 1024 - 1885 - 2 - 694 = 4552
Franklin - 225 - 243 - 417 - 0 - 156 = 1041
Greene - 1027 - 1111 - 1882 - 8 - 1377 = 5405
Wilks - 5152 - 6740 - 12160 - 180 - 7268 = 31500
Slaves were a large portion of several of the counties. In Chatham County
for instance the ratio was 3.2 slaves to each free person.

I would hope this could be done by private vote, the way other states do
it.
I would also hope that accessibility for all would be a consideration for
judging a county of the month. I would never vote for a county that
locked a number of people out of their site by not providing a route
around the frames they are using.

Donna continues to do such a fine job with updating the Helpful Georgia
Links page. I did this for a long time, so I know how much time it takes
to keep all the Links working and updated.
If you've not looked at it recently, take a minute to go there.
This is one of those that I visit often when I have misplaced one of my
important links....or when someone asks me a question about "where to find".
Donna would welcome your input if you find any new Georgia Links that are
especially helpful.

I agree. It sounds like a great idea. I even have a good nominee to throw
out for consideration. The Randolph County site, by Betty and Bernie
Johnson, is very nice.
Yes, I love fancy sites, but this one isn't fancy at all. It is nicely laid
out, everything is in logical navigation order, no large, bandwidth hog
graphics. Just overall, a very easy site for visitors to use.
I've never corresponded with the Johnsons, but I wish to use this message to
tell them, as a GAGenWeb CC, and user, how much I appreciate their hard
work.

Tim,
I like the idea of the county of the month, but don't pick them on style and
content (this could become political). My idea would be to put a spot light
on one County per month and highlight it. That way they will all have a
turn! I always like visiting the County of the Month back when. Ash

As of this afternoon the county selection page shows that the
following counties are available for adoption:
Candler, Seminole, Spalding.
Several others show that they are under construction. Would the CCs
who have adopted a county in the last several weeks please review:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/table.htm
and verify that I have the status of your county down correctly?
Lastly, I'd like to reinstitute the County of the Month program. This
would be
a chance for the public to review and comment on the sites they like best.
Please consider this and give me some feedback. A sister state is in the
process of starting this and I feel that our project could also benefit from
this.
