Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Attn: NE Region GAGenWeb CCs using the GenConnect Query forum/board:
It appears from the following message from GenConnect/RootsWeb [RW]
that if you haven't already requested all 6 data boards for your county,
they have added them to the system. You should consider managing these
additional boards to be consistent. Instructions on how to do this is
included in their message. If you have any questions, just let me know.
******************************
For those of you who may not know (and even those who do), RootsWeb has
developed "Resource Clusters" .... websites containing links and search
boxes for all the various resources available on any RootsWeb server.
We now have Surname Resource sites and US County Resource sites.
http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/
Part of the process in developing these sites was to fill out or make
full
GenConnect suites for each of the top 10K surnames from the RSL, and
also
for every US county. (a suite of boards is one of each type: query,
bibles,
bios, deeds, obits, pensions, wills).
Some of you may have only one or more of the "types" of boards for your
chosen surname or county. We have now created all the other "types" to
fill the suite.
If you'd like to request that you be allowed to monitor these new
boards,
we've provided you with "Adoption Request Forms". If you're interested,
please visit the appropriate form ......

EVIDENCE FOR PROOF
Evidence is the means of proving or disproving a fact. There are five
types
of evidence:
1. PRIMARY: Primary evidence is that from a record when the record
itself is
the cause or result of the action or fact to be proved. Examples are:
Vital
records, Wills, Church Records, Tombstones etc., This is the best
evidence.
2. COLLATERAL: Collateral evidence is when it is collateral to the
purpose
of the records but never the less an integral part of the record:
Example:
If a man speaks of his daughter by her married name, it signifies a
marriage
when no marriage record can be found.
3. SECONDARY: Evidence consists of statements made by persons of facts
they
know of their own knowledge: Examples: Oaths, Old Letters,
Depositions.
4. CIRCUMSTANTIAL: If two or more facts are so related, that if one
which
can be proved by a higher type of evidence is true. When the other is
necessarily, true. Example: Record shows a daughter of a man and later
he
marries someone, it shows he was married before and had at least one
daughter.
5. REPORTED: Rumor, Hearsay, County Histories, and Many Biographies.
These
are the least trustworthy but good for clues.
SOURCES OF GENEALOGICAL MATERIALS
1. PRIVATE: Family Bibles, Ledgers, Diaries, Photograph Albums,
Samplers,
Old Silver, Fly Leaves of old Books, Old Letters, Old Wills, Diplomas,
Citations, Discharge Papers, School Records, Insurance Claims, Baby
Books,
Grandmother Bracelets, Etc.
2. PUBLIC: Census, Pension, Military, Land Tax, Deeds, Laws, Church
Records,
Court, Probate, Vital Records, Mortality, Immigration, Naturalization,
Obituary Notices, Cemetery Records and Tombstones, Register of Voters,
Maps,
and Plat Books. City Directories and Telephone Books.
3. COMPILED: Printed Genealogies, County & Local Histories,
Periodicals,
Compiled Tax Lists, Cemetery, Etc., Newspapers - Articles, Brand Books.

Just FYI, the one I received Weds evening said" Hi this is Tomi" I am
sending you the info we discussed.
I looked at my messages that I put into a Personal Folder that I hold until
I receive something and I didn't have anything previously from "Tomi", so I
replied back and stated I was not sure what information she/he was sending,
but to be clearer and I preferred not to have zip files, and I deleted it.
I was extremely lucky, so be careful what you open, just because we do
genealogy and think "information we discussed or wanted" does not mean it is
from a "rooter".
Thanks. Brenda

Good questions. Here are my best answers, though things may change as
we work out the obvious bugs.

They continue to exist, initially tended by RootsWeb staff.
###

We don't know yet -- among other things, it depends on what USGW does.

All of them.

Yes, I believe so.

Yes, it is live now.

After receiving the previous note - I thought about it and came up with
these questions. These were questions I felt would cover most situations
known to me within the Project.

A few questions, if I may?
1. If a CC doesn't use or choose to use the tools what happens to them?
Does anyone else get to use them?
2. If the CC's site is not on RW - can they use any of the tools?
3. If the CC decides to use the GenConnect feature will it work like it
does now with the password and monitoring duties?
4. Is GC live now on the pages if someone decided to or does use them?

One of the things about life is you either keep improving or you
become a corpse standing on your feet.
That's true for RootsWeb, and it's equally true for USGenWeb. Since
USGenWeb was founded, many other organizations have sprung up that
partially or wholly attempt to clone USGenWeb's content: ALHN,
GenExchange, Broderbund's GenForum, Ancestry, Randall Haight's
genweb.net, ...
If USGenWeb is going to stay the premier geographically-oriented
genealogy project, one of the things it's going to need to do is
continuously improve the range and quality of services it provides
to the genealogical community.
In tonight's RootsWeb Review, RootsWeb is announcing "County
Resource" pages for every county in America. The pages include or
will include links to USGenWeb sites on RootsWeb, a mailing list, a
GenConnect suite, a link registry, search engines for the USGenWeb
Archives and the RSL, an event calendar, a guestbook, and various
other tools.
You can see the County Resources at:
http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/
We expect to be adding tools to the Resource pages as rapidly as we
can. There will surely be a Social Security Death Index search and
some other nice features coming on line in the not-to-distant future.
###
So isn't this just another competitor for USGenWeb?
==> Not at all. <==
While we're still working out the details, RootsWeb's intent is to
put each County Resource page and all the resources on them at the
disposal of the appropriate USGenWeb County Coordinator. CCs can
link to the pages, or they can borrow the HTML from the pages and
incorporate the tools directly into their own pages. How (or even
if) you administer those resources is largely your own choice.
That's your own choice. The tools are there if you want them. And
there will be more and better tools available to you as time goes on.
Speaking personally, I hope most folks choose to use the tools.
USGenWeb is one of the two most impressive projects I've ever seen
unfold on the Internet (the development of Linux is the other ... ),
and I would very much like to see USGenWeb stay on the cutting edge
of technology and provide better services to genealogists than any
of its imitators. Cheers, B.

I'm about to send a series of three notes to you regarding a new set of

There is a new virus, "Worm.Explore", which is transmitted through an email
attachment and which is very dangerous.
If you receive an email which has the attachment "zipped_files.exe" DO NOT
DOUBLE CLICK ON THIS FILE TO RUN IT. It will destroy vital files on your
hard drive and on the network.
If you have already run this file, do not turn your computer off. Call
tech support at once for help.
A more detailed description is below.
HOW WORM.EXPLORE WORKS
The worm -- first discovered in Israel -- enters as an email attachment
with the name "zipped_files.exe." Its deceptively friendly message reads:
Hi "name of recipient"!
I received your e-mail and I shall send you a reply ASAP.
Till then, take a look at the attached zipped docs.
Bye.
Experts say you should delete it without opening it, and then empty the
deleted items file.
If it executes, the worm copies itself to the windows system directory with
the filename "Explore.exe" and then modifies the WIN.INI file so the
program executes each time Windows starts.
It then uses the infected computer's email client to harvest email
addresses in order to propagate itself.
But behind the scenes, it plays real mean: searching C through Z drives and
selecting crucial file extensions and rendering them useless by making them
0 bytes long. Result: Non-recoverable data or computer system failure.

As a Wilkinson descendant I am interested in researching more about the
family history. I would appreciate any guidance in this area. Feel like I
am on the right track because of the Georgia-Kentucky connection. Have heard
some family rumors of the General being given a Mexican land grant in Texas
and did minimal research at the Newberry Library in Chicago in the early
'80s. I am a Texas Wilkinson. Very interested in hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Susan Wilkinson Nix, aka Tejasue(a)aol.com

Take a look at the new records I just got put up on the web site today!
I'm working on typing up the index to Marriage Book 1 for Dougherty Co.
So far, I've gotten the Groom's Index done for letters A-G. There are no
marriage dates, as I was only able to copy the handwritten index before
my plane left Salt Lake in January! :-) But if anyone has dates for
these couples or corrections (the copies & handwriting are HARD to read
in places), please let me know.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gadoughe/marrbook1_ag.html
I also have finished the Roster for Co.G, 17th Regt., Georgia Vol. Inf.
Army Northern Virginia, C.S.A. from Dougherty County:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gadoughe/CoG17thReg.html
I have about 1/2 of the roster for Co. E, 4th Regt., Georgia Vol. Inf.
Army Northern Virginia, C.S.A. from Doughety County:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gadoughe/CoE4thReg.html
I won't be able to get the 2nd 1/2 done until I get an additional page
copied that I somehow missed (too much of a hurry I suppose!)
Take care!

Hello.... A friend and I will be going to Huxford Library tomorrow.
This is an official offer to do lookups. I must request that you be
VERY SPECIFIC and VERY THOROUGH in sending whatever info you have on
each ancestor involved in the request. I usually like to have siblings,
years, etc., so as to be able to verify I've found the correct person or
family. (i.e. John Smith? get real -- ya gotta have more! :)

Hello Everyone,
Say a big email THANK YOU to Jan Pieroni <pieroni(a)aug.com> who worked
long and hard over the past several weeks to bring you our lastest
masterpiece:
Union Co. GA Tombstone Transcription Project Database
It's now on-line off of the cemetery page at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaunion/UnionCoCemeteryPage.htm
Please learn about the project and how you can help increase its
information for everyone.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaunion/Tombstones.html
Our next phase of this Project is to begin lists for each cemetery of
folks known to be in 'unmarked' graves. Look for changes to our
cemetery page in the near future which will include information about
this next phase and how you can help.
Have a wonderful Summer and Happy Hunting,
