Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
A couple of other states now have a Lost and Found service. I was
wondering if there would be any interest in having the same sort of thing
in Georgia?
How it works is - person A comes across a picture, family Bible or
something of genealogical value. What the item is gets described on a page
so that person B coming along and wanting to get it from Person A because
it's their family - an example from Illinois -
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilphotos/family.htm
Let's hear from you folk if you think it is a great idea or if you would
like to volunteer to maintain such a page.
Thanks,
Tim

In a message dated 99-04-30 19:39:36 EDT, you write:
<< Just my opinion here, but since I haven't had these problems, maybe I'm
doing something right?
>>
You made no mention of how many census records, wills, birth or other vital
records you have transcribed.
It is not that you are doing anything right, what you are doing is allowing
people to post. That is a very different situation from what we are talking
about.
The problem is that the records of old did not give the names of slaves. I
was personally accused of being bigoted, biased and they wanted to know if
any government money was being given to me for Putnam County. It makes no
difference what county it was since I only transcribed census records as they
were written. The writer was furious that there was not more information for
black researchers. I explained that I was a volunteer and I transcribed what
was of interest to me in my search for my family and if he was appalled at
the lack of records then I would suggest he do as I did, go to the library
and transcribe all the info on slaves he could put his hands on and send it
to the appropriate site and that I just knew the webmaster would be thrilled
to have it.
As for a central clearing house, I disagree with you. I think that the
African-American site is a great site to gather all the information together
for the entire state by surname since slave records are so hard to come by.
Most of the records are from wills. I send all the slave info I get to the
African American site because I feel it makes more sense to have all the info
at one location instead of the researcher having to search every county in
Georgia, many times they don't even know what county their ancestors were in.
Just as we have archives for cemetery, will and other special projects it
just simplifies the search and saves loads of time.
I also think that when someone is making a query they should state black or
white and that way it will also streamline the research.
I have many times researched and looked over everything I could put my hands
on and then only to find that they were searching for black ancestors and I
only had info on my white ancestors. Just a matter of being able to identify
the material to be researched.

Virginia asked me to send a note along to this list about the HISTORIC
PLAQUES OF THE WORLD PROJECT. Wayne Cook of Ontario, Canada, came up
with this particular idea... To find out how/why, visit the main site
at http://www.waynecook.com/awhy.html
His Project directory is at http://www.waynecook.com/adirectory.html
Here, he has separate directories for Canada and US... Choose US, and
you'll see a list of the states that have been adopted out.
My Georgia Page of Historic Plaques of the Word Project is currently at
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ridge/9332/hwp-ga.html
I've not got a lot up there yet, but I'm looking forward to adding ALOT
this summer (yet another reason to travel around Ga taking photos)! I'm
also in the process of "revamping" the pages. Please feel free to visit
and offer CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM (mailto:vashley@bigfoot.com). I'm
always open to suggestions!
If you have a transcript of a local historical plaque such as those
found on the roadside, in historic cemeteries, in front of courthouses,
etc., on a county page, please let me know so that I can link to it.
Eventually, I plan to have them all transcribed, cross-referenced and
cross-linked at one site. If you have a photo you can scan and send,
WONDERFUL! I also would like to have these as a part of the Georgia
Project Pages.
Vickie
Thanks to all my "proofreaders" out there, many of you found the page.
I wanted to say that I appreciate the prompt replies that helped those
who didn't realize what I'd done... and apologize for the mistake in the
first place (12:30 this morning, I thought I'd proofed it carefully
but...) I've already had several replies with links to add, as well as
a couple of volunteers. THANKS, VOLUNTEERS!
If you decide to volunteer by transcribing some markers in your area,
and/or taking photos of them, please remember in your email to tell me
WHERE your 'area' is. No sense duplicating work!
Thanks!
Vickie
I have had a couple of notes since I posted the material about the
"mandate"....and I want to make clear that this was just for your
information ONLY.
The Federal Mandate DOES NOT APPLY to any of our GAGenWeb site!! And it
certainly is not being entertained as a requirement by anybody!!
I was just passing it along in case anybody was interested. David's
follow-up note also was very helpful to me. I'd like to understand more
about this and to make my sites able to be used by everyone, and yet not
lose any of the artistic parts of our Web sites.
But, this is just a personal interest of mine.....
I'll add it to the Help Page simply to store it for future reference in case
any CC does want to review it.
AGAIN, NOBODY is trying to tell you to Do This!!!
Virginia
Thanks, Virginia,
The letter below would probably explain it better than I could.
The law is not about our web sites, but federal government sites. But
I think our county and state genealogy web sites should be accessible to
everyone, including blind people on text-only web browsers.

Hi,
Thought I would let you know, I am in the process of redesigning Greene
County's Web page and moving it to RootsWeb, waiting for the space to be
approved. Key has asked that I do this as she has a new wee one at home and
being a mother of three children the amount of quality time she can give
right now is limited. While we are waiting for RootsWeb to find the space,
I did want you to know there is a new mail list already up and running.
GAGreene-L(a)RootsWeb.com . Please be patient while I make all the changes
to this county.

downtime to get moved!!!

Wyndell Taylor, RC for Metro Region, just called me on the telephone and
asked that I get a message out to everyone that he is temporarily off-line
as he changes ISP.
He asked that I let everyone know about this just as all his messages will
be lost during this time period.
He expects to be back in full swing in about 5 days.

Everyone,
Thanks to Tim Stowell and Larry Whitfield, 2 graphic wizards here
within GAGenWeb, we will be getting a faster-loading map. We are trying
to keep it so that the land lot #s are still readable. I'll let you
know when we have the new version on-line or can find some alternatives.

As promised, the 1832 Land Lottery Map of Union Co., GA is finally
on-line at the Union Co. GAGenWeb site.
It's up there now....but it's a HUGE, HUGE file. Before you even go to
this page, be prepared for a 25-minute or more download time with a 56K
modem. Print it out so you have it!!
Sorry, but this is the best I know how to do this...anyone out there
that's has a better way or idea, I'd love to hear about it. I
understand there is a website out there that will shrink .jpg files for
faster downloading but..where?? and how??? I'm not a computer geru on
this subject at all.....
