Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Tim just sent me a quick note. He's run into some problems with receiving
his e-mail at work, and there are lots of "supervisors" around today.....so
please, hold off sending anything until he can get back with us.....
He's had to unsub from some lists, and will get back with us with a "better
address".

Now that the election is over, please take a minute to update your pages to
reflect Tim Stowell's title.
(In fact, some county pages still have the name of Laura Cook and Pat Lowe!
I think some people were just waiting until after the election to make their
changes!)
An easy way to always keep updated with changes is just to LINK to:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/about.htm
About the GAGenWeb Project
Then someone else does ALL the updating for you!!
ADOPT A COUNTY
If you want to retain "adopt a County" information, be sure that you've
updated that link to:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/mailform.htm
Thanks for making all these updates!!
Remember your ideas, suggestions, etc are always welcome.
Write to either:
gagenweb-l(a)rootsweb.com (Tim and the RCs plus Special Projects people)
or
gagen-l(a)rootsweb.com (Goes to all the CCs)
Sharing some new finds (like Jim (Lamar Co) with the URL for the map site;
Carol (Monroe) with the migration pattern project).....is always great!
Asking for suggestions (Laura - Peach County) is also a good use of this list!
Thanks for your time....know everyone is busy!

You have added quite a number of County Mailing Lists lately. Many of you
already have this Search Engine code visible on your pages, but thought I'd
pass it along again for some of our NEW CCs.
Just substitute the NAME of your County list in the "value" place (where I
have gataylor)
This takes the researcher directly to a Form to type in a specific name or
topic to see if it has been discussed previously on the County List.

<FORM METHOD="post"

I need some clarification about making our County Pages more "searchable".
I had been told that the important things would be to include these HTML
codes in the beginning of the page:
1)Title (make it very descriptive) Taylor County Index Page
2)
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Taylor County Genealogy Information
including Military, Cemeteries, Churches, Queries and Census.">
3)<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Butler, Reynolds, Muster Rolls,
Census, Bible Records">
Then each page would have keywords specific to their content.
I'm not sure if I'm understanding the process. I assume that this is for
search engines like Yahoo, etc.
The second part of the question, is with the new Search Engine device on our
pages, which Rootsweb has created.....do we need to do anything else or is
all the above really necessary?
I have found that this new search engine is quite effective. It took me a
while to get up the nerve to try it. If anybody needs any help, please do
ask, as there are plenty of people who can walk you through it! There are
also several samples already available for you to look at.

Hello everyone
I just wanted to let everyone know that there is a new redesigned Jasper
County GAGenWeb page. I am the new County Coordinator for this county and
have added several new things to the site including GenConnect boards and a
Rootsweb Search engine. Please go by and check the site out and let me know
what you think. The website is located at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gajasper/ I have also created a mailing list for
Jasper County and the address to use to subscribe is
GAJASPER-L-request(a)rootsweb.com please put subscribe as the ONLY word in the
body of the message. I look forward to hearing feedback about the site and
also would love to have as many records online as possible so if you have
some to share please let me know. Also thanks to Bill Gordon for his work
on the site before me.

Carol Johnson does such a terrific job with her Talbot County page. She
types in all the data records, manages the County List, and generates lots
of information.
However, she's always had someone else to do the actual HTML coding and
uploading. She is working closely with another individual right now, but it
seems as though they could use even another "team player" in helping to get
the formatting of the material done.
Would any of you be interested in volunteering to help Carol out with this?
Carol has devoted hours to securing and reading microfilm and has even
assisted other counties with their data, so I would really like to provide
her with the technical support that she needs in keeping these pages updated.

Hey y'all,
I was looking around for some digital maps when I found the following site:
http://gis1.state.ga.us/view/ras/doq/viewer/
-- Availability of Digital Orthophoto Quarter-Quadrangles.
You click on a portion of the state, which brings up a map of 16 quadrangles.
Each quadrangle is divided into 4 sections, each section into 4 parts of
the orthophoto.
Essentially, these are photographs of the geographical layout of the state.
The images are in JPEG format, 870x1024 pixels, between 210KB and 139KB.
I looked for my house and found it. However, the photographs aren't
recent. Probably 3 to 4 years old, maybe older. At least Lamar County,
the county I live in.
The Georgia GIS Data Clearinghouse, the organization running the web site,
says the images are free for the downloading. More detailed images,
georeferenced are available for a charge.
So, I'm looking at ways of using them....noting the cemeteries, historic
areas, civil war sites, etc. Could be interesting!

Hello everyone. Want to share an idea that I hope will spread. A few of
us VAGenWeb ccs are doing this but it would be so cool if every cc could
so it. We have a Migration Pattern Project started.
I have tested this for my 3 GAGenWeb Counties and my 3 VAGenWeb
counties. Used my county mail lists to announce and request data. Also
onsite announcements. Where I do not have lists, I posted announcements
only on the sites.
Below is the message I posted to Monroe Co. researchers:
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi Monroe Countians. Am starting a couple of new pages on this the
Monroe Co., GAGenWeb site and I need your help. It's all about ancestral
Migration Patterns.
Recently Linda Russell Lewis, state coordinator of VAGenWeb called to
our attention a neat example of a Migrations page, Paula Wiegand's page
at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~vagiles/migratn.html
I am doing something similar for Monroe Co. GAGenWeb; I am doing a
MIGRATION OUT page and a MIGRATION IN page. I am following Paula's
example with the addition of the submitter's name.
I would like to have from you, the following info:
1) Name of ancestor. Surname in all caps first, then given name.
2) Name of the county where migrated from into Monroe Co. and when.
Approx. time is fine, if that's all you have.
3) Name of the county to which migrated from Monroe Co. and when.
Approx. time is fine, if that's all you have.
A Migration IN entry might be thus:
* MERRYTHWAITE, Throckmorton L., from Appleblossom Co., GA, about 1820
(Carol Middleton)
The Migration OUT entry might be thus:
* MERRYTHWAITE, Throckmorton L., to Frogjump Co., GA, about 1840 (Carol
Middleton)
The county name will be hyperlinked to that same county site in
USGenWeb. The submitter's name will be hyperlinked to the submitter's
email address.
Other county coordinators will be starting these pages and the dream is
that we can link up across the country. If y'all are interested, and I
hope you are, email your info to me (my name) privately when you can
gather it together.
---------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------
You can see the ongoing pages on my Monroe Co. site at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gamonroe/mnrmgr1.html where the Intro is
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gamonroe/mnrmgin1.html for Migrations IN
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gamonroe/mnrmgot1.html for Migrations OUT
I find that keeping it SIMPLE is the best policy. One move in / one move
out. If county unknown, then the state is okay (or country). I am
getting entries regularly from researchers. They feel like they are
participating in the project and that is good all around. You get the
idea, don't you??
Once started there is not that much to keep up with.
Some nuts and bolts issues:
I did go through my older queries and pulled out what I could. I also
keep offline pages with links for all possible counties and states
within USGenWeb Project. This took a bit of time but this way I can copy
/ paste the county links without having to go those sites each time. I
have county links for all states south and west and of course can add
more as needs arise. (Folks didn't seem to go too far off).
All this done, it is now apparent that it would be lots more interesting
if ALL ccs did this. That way someday a researcher might hop / skip /
jump across the USGenWeb Project following the family ties, via USGenWeb
Project county links (and WorldGenWeb too).
What do you say?? Will you play??

Hi Tim... I would appreciate it, if you would share this
with your
fellow GeorgiaGenWeb Volunteers... Thanks in Advance, Jim
Hi Fellow Volunteers... I want to thank "everyone" who voted
in this election. I also want to commend the SE/MA Region
for posting more votes than any other Region. And those of
you who didn't vote, I would really like to know "why you
didn't vote?"
I stand here among some of the most giving people in the
world, shoulder to shoulder, none above the rest. Your
concerns are my concerns, your fears are my fears for I
represent "you". How can I represent you if I don't hear
from you? Obviously I can't. So let me hear from you.
When you have a concern, throw it at me. If you are totally
content with things as they are, I need to hear that too.
Don't be strangers, step up and at least say "hi"
A few other comments...
Next time you feel like sending a "scathing" post to a list,
send it to me. I won't take it personally even if you mean
it that way. Maybe we can find some common ground.
I always follow the rules even if I do not believe in them.
So there will be no "leaks" from the Board List by me, but I
will do my best to keep you informed. I will work within
the system to make the process more open. But I will not
allow my actions to create chaos or division.
100 votes in a region the size of ours is not a mandate. So
I still need to hear from you. Keep an eye on me... Be
informed... On any issues that you believe in, pro or con,
let me know. I will do my best to represent "you".
I believe in "YOU", all of you and I thank you for all you
have done to make Free Genealogical Resources on the
Internet a reality. I hope that I can live up to your and
my expectations as your representative.
Sincerely,
Jim Powell Jr

USGenWeb was indeed fortunate to have such a well qualified
group of candidates. And we appreciate their willingness to run for
USGenWeb offices, and thank all of them.
Congratulations to our own, Tim Stowell!
