My good friend, Mike Deloach, Archive manager for North Carolina shared
this, and I wanted your thoughts on it.
He has outlined several options....(and I don't think you need to make any
changes on old files, but you may want to consider choosing one of these
methods for the files you load in the future.)
We now would have the option of just using a link to explain the terms of
the copyright... using the uRL + Copyright. All rights reserved.
I personally like this because it allows for a change in the copyright
notice without having to change any files at all. Although the "spirit" of
the copyright doesn't change....the wording (to make it clearer) certainly has!

Hi Everyone,
You may have seen where I had proposed that we reduce the USGenWeb Notice
that is placed on all of our posted documents to the following:
Copyright. All rights reserved.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm
Linda Lewis and I have been discussing this, and she has given me the OK
to use the abbreviated form of the Notice.
Concurrent with establishing this procedure, we have adopted a new Notice:
---------------------------------------------------------------
USGENWEB NOTICE
All documents placed in the USGenWeb Archives remain the property of the
contributors, who retain publication rights in accordance with US Copyright
Laws and Regulations.
In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet,
these documents may be used by anyone for their personal research. They may
be used by non-commercial entities so long as all notices and submitter
information is included.
These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit.
Any other use, including copying files to other sites, requires permission
from the contributors PRIOR to uploading to the other sites.
The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file
permanently for free access.
---------------------------------------------------------------
There is no need to change any file that has already been posted.
For all future posts, all files MUST have the following:
Header, which specifies the county, state, file category, and document name.
Contributor's name and e-mail address.
USGenWeb Notice.
The choice of how you implement the requirement is yours. Following are
examples that may be used as guides:
Example 1.
Obituary: COLLINS, Wm. Penn; Boulder CO Camera - August 23, 1949

Donated by: Bobbie Verstraete <bobbiev(a)swbell.net>
March 14, 2002
Copyright. All rights reserved.

Example 2.

Archives by: Dawn Watson booleygirl(a)aol.com

Example 3.

If you wish, the full USGenWeb Notice mat be used in the place of the
abbreviated form.
The benefits of establishing this procedure and the new USGenWeb Notice are:
All documents posted in the Archives would have a standard Notice.
The new notice removes ambiguities which may exist.
If the Notice has to be changed, it would only have to be changed in one
place, and it could be done immediately.
The size of the Notice would no longer be larger than small contributions.
Please send me your questions and comments.
Mike
