State Coordinators and File Managers for the Archives Census Project:
Most of you are aware that negotiations between our Census Project and the
USGW Census Project have started. We would like to let all of you know
that we are continuing in the negotiations with The USGW Census Project.
The hopeful result of our negotiations will be to have one Census Project,
to merge the current State Coordinators and File Managers from both projects
to share the workload, and to have one set of FTP subfolders for the on-line
census files.
We ask that you review the results of the negotiations with an open mind so
that we can all work together to keep this marvelous project running
smoothly with a minimum of interference to the many wonder volunteers that
are involved in all aspects of the Census Project.
Below the = = = line is a message we intend to send to the USGWARCH-CENSUS-L
and USGWARCH-CART-L email lists soon. Please review the message and let us
know if you have any suggestions for changing it. We will probably wait
until
the avalanche of email over "time limits" drops off.

Thanks to all of you who have been sending suggestions for how we can
improve the Archives Census Project. We have some great things planned for
the
future direction of the Archives Census Project and having more State
Coordinators
with each of them having fewer states is one of those planned items. With
less states to handle, the State Coordinator will be better able to stay in
touch with the transcribers for that state.
We are sure most of you know there are two Census Projects. The reasons for
the separation were made long enough ago that those of us handling the
Archives Census Project now either were not involved with the Census Project
or were not in a position to alter the separation. The reasons no longer
seem
important and are really not worth rehashing, so please let us not generate
a lot of email on "why are there two census projects".
We are planning on merging the two Census Projects into one "super" Census
Project. We will be combining the State Coordinators from both projects and
therefore have more State Coordinators with each one handling less states
than they now do. We will also combine the two separate FTP websites into
one within the "Archives". All of the census files will be included in the
Archives Search Engine.
The State Coordinators from both projects have tried to check the
assignments of the other project so as not to double-assign a county. I'm
sure there will be a few double-assignments and those will be dealt with in
the best way possible for all involved.
We are in the midst of planning the merge now, and are working on how to
best organize the combined project. The many wonderful, dedicated
transcribers from both projects deserve the best, and that is what we intend
to make the combined census project.
In light of all the additional email that has been generated of late, we
would like to request that anyone wanting to reply to this message, send it
directly to John Jacoby at callie513(a)home.com rather than the list.
