Hi Lee,
If you don't mind please forward this the Archives-L. I didn't
want to forward your message without permission.
- -------------------------------
<G>That will teach me to compose messages when I'm sleepy.
Following is the Goal for a starting point.
====
GOAL of the USGenWeb Archives Census Project
The USGenWeb Archives Census Project is an all-volunteer
project to transcribe census records in a standard format in order
to make them available to genealogical researchers on the Internet.
This free digital library includes scanned census images, transcribed
census schedules, and indexes.
====
Connie and Sue will be going through all their Census files
and all of our census files looking for those done with the
stardardized CART or XLS format transcriptions. The
Census Project has it's own standards and goals to meet
and we are going to separate out those transcriptions
into those special directories. But there is great value
to any submission to the archives no matter what the
subject. These will remain in the regular archives under
the census directory. When these files are put into the
fedcens directory from the ftp directory that they currently
reside, the File Managers will be notified
of what was placed into those directories and then
the File Managers can get their links changed and
delete the duplicates at their leisure.
You will not be able to access their fedcens directories
and they will not be able to access yours. They will not
be rummaging through your files, I promise. We are
really just trying to figure out where we are in the attainment
of our goal of having a complete set of standardized
census transcriptions in the archives.
These are not new "stricter" standards but those
that were set when the original project was
set up by Linda. <G>She can probably give you
a better overview than I can on the subject.
Any suggestions for making this process more
streamlined/easier are always welcome. This is a team
effort and even though the Census is a separate
area I like to think of it as another State with a
set of FMs that works with all the other states.
Special circumstances have made us have to have
the separate directories but with everyone's help
we can all work as a team.
Maggie

Connie Burkett and Sue Soden will be going through all the
census files and categorizing them as well. There are also
plans for some stricter quality control under Connie's excellent
guidance.

Maggie, I didn't understand what you meant.
Connie and Sue are looking at "all the census files"? Or are they only
going to look at the previous "Census Project " files?
Finally, you say we have plans for a "stricter standard?" Are you saying
the consolidated Census Project will have stricter transcription quality
control standards? Or are you are suggesting the general Archives FMs start
judging the quality of/turning down non-project transcriptions?
We could use some early clarification on what you really meant. As always,
I have some comments/suggestions but I didn't want waste your time on
something I probably didn't understand anyway.
Thanks,
Lee
