We have veered from that somewhat, and as the Archives grow, it might be
necessary at times to create a longer filename.
What's more important than that is the directory structure and not ever
ever using uppercase. All of those will eventually have to be renamed to
lowercase.
If you have to put a separation the filename, please don't use an
underscore, but use a dash instead. Ex:
don't use under_score
do use under-score
We are building a permanent repository, and structure and naming
conventions are very important. I'd like to think that once a file is
placed in a particular structure, it will be the same no matter where
the Archives might be in 25, 50 years or so. One of these years, the
USGenWeb Archives might be stored at the National Archives, and we want
them to be as clean and tidy as possible. :)
