Hi Cousins,
This is in response to Emily's posting of Germantown wills. Several of the surnames
are familiar (& even related) but I don't have record of the specific individuals
other than those I note.
[Re: will of Heriott, Thomas]
I have family friends who live in HURSTPIERPOINT, Sussex, England, in case anyone is
looking for a contemporary spelling.
[Re: will of Thomas, John]
Though he'd not be related, I wonder if this HUGH ROBERTS is the same Quaker who made
at least 3 trips between Wales and Pennsylvania, persuading many, including the children
of EVAN ap EVAN, to emigrate. THOMAS ap EVAN was to have emigrated with a WILLIAM ap JOHN
in 1697 in order to purchase land for those who followed in 1698. Perhaps there is a JOHN
connection with those noted in this will.
[Re: will of Warner, Ann]
HUGH EVANS witnessed the will. I believe him to be son of THOMAS EVANS, who was the son
of EVAN ap EVAN. Hugh Evans, b. 2/1682, d. 4/6/1772, m.(1) Catherine Morgan 8/4/1706,
m.(2) Alice Lewis 6/25/1710, m.(3) Lowry Lloyd 12/13/1716. That's all I know about
him.
[Re: will of Wister, John]
I have record of a REUBEN HAINES, b. 11/1/1851. His father was John Smith Haines, b.
3/4/1820, m. Mary Drinker Cope, b. 11/4/1819, and his grandfather was also named Reuben
Haines & may be the one noted in this will. FYI: Here's some info on John Smith
Haines (son) for what it's worth: "John Smith Haines, was the son of REUBEN and
Jane Haines of Wyck (now a house museum at Walnut Lane and Germantown Avenue). John
Haines owned approximately 100 acres adjacent to Awbury on the southeast and extending to
Chelten Avenue. In 1849, he commissioned the noted architect Thomas U. Walter (designer
of the nation's Capitol dome and wings) to build a house for him near Haines Street.
He was a gentleman farmer with income from real estate and a director of the Germantown
Hospital. He established a nursery and greenhouses in the area now known as Devon Place.
His property along Haines Street was later included as part of Awbury."
Also:
RUTH MILES married OWEN EVANS (b. 1687, d. 3/1/1757) on 11/3/1715. Owen was the son of
THOMAS EVANS, son of EVAN ap EVAN. I wonder if Samuel Miles and James Miles were related
through her. I don't know any more about her family.

And that's all I can find.

P.S. to Emily: Since my family all grew up either living in the area, or visiting
relatives, I'd love to check out the Germantown website. And talk about families
looping back into marriages, you'll find plenty in that area. My cousin who now lives
in Glenmore found the fellow her daughter was dating on the family tree! He was several
generations removed (and an Evans), but it still demoralized the poor girl. Let me know
the website if you would. Thanks.
