Emily and All
I have been out of town this week and just read your message of Jul 10th.
Below is information from my files which I hope will assist you:
Robert and Sarah (Evans) Pugh:
"Sarah Evans, sister of the four brothers, dau. of Evan ap Evan, m. Robert
Pugh (the marriage, doubtless, in Wales). She appears to have come over
with her brothers."
SOURCE: HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS OF GWYNEDD, 1884 by Howard M. Jenkins, p.
149. Jenkins quotes his source as being a Evans Family genealogy compiled
in 1797 by John Evans, Sr and his sis., Elizabeth who were the grandchildren
of Cadwallader Evans. He stated he had possession of a copy of this
genealogy.
Mary Pugh, "eldest dau. of Robert Pugh, of Gwynedd..." m. Roland Roberts
"3rd mo. 1, 1713"
PRIMARY SOURCE: Haverford MM records (later called Radnor MM)
PUBLISHED SOURCE: HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS OF GWYNEDD, 1884 by Howard M.
Jenkins, p. 110
Ellin Pugh, "dau. of Robert Pugh" m. "John Roger, son of Roger Roberts...
21st da, 4th mo, 1717." at Gwynedd MM
PRIMARY SOURCE: Gwynedd MM minutes
PUBLISHED SOURCE: MARRIAGES AND DEATHS OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA,
1999 by Charlotte Meldrum, p. 37
If Mary and Ellin were married no later than their 20th birthday then their
birth dates would have been between 1693 and 1697, which was prior to Robert
and Sarah's removal to PA in 1698. Also, their births were not recorded at
either the Gwynedd or Haverford MM's as were the other five children per
Jeanne.
Emily, I suggest when in Wales you begin your search for the birth records
for Mary and Ellin Pugh in the period 1690-1697 and the marriage records
for Robert and Sarah in the period 1690-1695.
Now, as for Evan Pugh, Sr.:
He was b. at Gwynedd, PA, 20th day, 5th Mo. (July) 1699
PRIMARY SOURCE : Gwynedd MM Minutes
PUBLISHED SOURCE: PENNSYLVANIA BIRTHS, MONTGOMERY COUNTY, 1682-1800, by
John T. Humphery, 1993, p 358
He m. about 1724 because in that year he was accused of "marrying out of the
discipline of the Friends." His wife's name was not given in the Gwynedd MM
minutes where this action was taken. However, previous researchers,
including the 19th century historian, Gilbert Cope, lists her name as Mary.
All his children have been recorded as those of Mary.
PRIMARY SOURCE: Gwynedd MM minutes, 1724 (Jeanne has the source data on
this)
Evan Pugh, Sr. moved to Frederick Co., Va., before 1750. Some time prior to
1757 he married the second time, Catherine (date and place unknown). In
June of 1757 Catherine is listed as his wife in a deed for the sale of his
1752 land grant in Frederick Co. to William Wilson, his neighbor.
PRIMARY SOURCE: Frederick Co., VA, court records dated June 7, 1757.
Sometime prior to 1767 Evan and Catherine moved eastward over the Great
North Mountain and settled on Turkey Run. This area of Frederick Co. became
a part of Dunmore Co. in 1772 and later Shenandoah Co. in 1778.
In 1767 Evan Pugh had a survey made for a 280 acre tract which he used to
support a land grant application. However, sometime between 1767 and 1771
(before his land grant was approved) both he and Catherine died on the same
day, she "after surviving him a few hours". His eldest son, Jacob Pugh,
claimed the right to his father's land grant as the Heir-at-Law to the
estate. Following a long process including the filing of several
depositions Jacob was finally granted the 280 acres in 1775.
PRIMARY SOURCES: NORTHERN NECK WARRANTS AND SURVEYS, 1722-1781 the
originals on file at the Virginia State Library, Richmond, VA.
I have no evidence that Evan Pugh, Sr. ever left the Frederick Co., VA. area
before he died. Two of his sons, John and Joseph did move south into NC
and one, Evan, Jr., into SC.
Copies of the book, THE ROBERT PUGH FAMILY---ONE BRANCH OF THE ROBERT AND
SARAH EVANS PUGH FAMILY, 1985 by Mary Elizabeth Pugh and Margaret Louise
Pugh Saville are on file in the Hampshire Co.,WVA, public library and in
the library at the National Headquarters of the DAR in Wash., DC. The
Hampshire Co library will provide a photo copy for the cost of the copying.
Emily, I hope this information will be of some help to you and the others
during your trip to Wales. I envy you. I hope to make the trip some day.
Maybe when I retire. Happy hunting.
Randall

Subject: [FRONGOCH] Evan-Pugh line
Greetings,
We've been a quiet clan lately. I do hope that means everyone is at the
library! <G> I know a few of us are frantically trying to get our lives
in
order and pack...
We have a new member who subbed tonight and I'm hoping to read the lineage
soon. I'm anxious to see which son or daughter is the ancestor.
Randall....I've a Evans-Pugh question for you or any other descendant of
Sarah Evans who m. Robert Pugh:
In January you wrote your lineage and I'm frantically (word of the week!
<G>) trying to get some leads on Robert Pugh with hopes of finding his
marriage to Sarah Evans in Wales. There are too many Robert ap Hughs in
the area and need to get some copy of your sources...hopefully primary
sources or well known ones, at least! <G> (If you can't email them to me,
try to send them to Roland who can bring them with him to Wales so I can
see them when I meet him...ok Roland?)
You state that Sarah and Robert came to America with two small daughter's
Mary and Ellin in 1698. Is this an assumption or have you found some
record showing the daughters born in Wales and with their parents upon
arrival? I'm hoping that this combination will help me find records of
them in Wales and single them out among all the others with similar names.
To find baptismal records, etc. of the daughters with parents listed could
be helpful in finding the locale of Robert Pugh and thus his parents.
Also, what leads you to belive that Evan Pugh, b. 1699 died either in
Frederick Co or Dunmore, (Shenandoah) Co, VA. Did you ever find out
which?
I had no idea she ventured into this area.
I know that many families from Frederick Co, VA left the area periodically
to escape Indian troubles...many going to North Carolina...would this have
been the case for Evan?
Randall, did you ever find out more on the book: "The Robert Pugh Family
--One Branch of The Robert and Sarah Evans Pugh Family" compiled by Mary
Elizabeth Pugh and sister Margaret Louise Pugh Saville in 1985? I never
had a chance to follow up with all the remodeling we have been doing since
January.
Anyone else having Evans lines that could update the crew that is leaving
for Wales soon, please forward the data to the list. I know my goal is to
work on Evan ab Evan and his parents & siblings in Fron Goch as well as
Evan ap Robert ap Lewis' stay in Ysptty Ifan which was prior to Fron Goch.
Beth, if possible, I'll write you to post to the list or have a friend
forward an email to you. She is Charleen. You won't hear from us much as
I don't want to take great advantage of Keith's kindness to use his
computer--plus we won't be in Fron Goch the whole time. If we find a
cyberbar, you'll hear more.
Thanks again Ken and Beth for saving emails....
Best wishes,
Emily
