Emily, Rowland and All
Rowland is very fortunate to live so close to the Swarthmore Library. His listing of the
four children of Robert and Sarah Pugh is important in establishing the fact that Sarah
Evans married Robert Pugh and not Evan Pugh as was recorded in some early MSS in Wales.
There was a fifth child born at Gwynedd. Her name was Sidney Pugh b. 20 5mo 1710
(Swarthmore Card File GWP p. 64-1). Of great significance also is the fact that all of
Sarah's brothers and their families were members of the Gwynedd Monthly Meeting at
this same time. Many of their children are also recorded in the records at Gwynedd.
These births have been abstracted and published in the book, "PENNSYLVANIA BIRTHS,
Montgomery County, 1682-1800" by John T. Humphery, 1993. For information contact John
T. Humphrey, P. O. Box 15190, Washington, D.C., 20003. Phone: 202-544-4142
Other Pugh information from Gwynedd MM Records at Swarthmore:
Card File GWP p. 23-1, marriage of "John Roger, son of Roger Roberts of Meirion,
County of Philadelphia, and Ellin Pugh, dau. of Robert Pugh 21st da. 4th mo, 1717"
Ellin was evidently b. in Wales since her birth is not recorded at Gwynedd.
Card File GWP p. 23-1?? "12 May 1724 Evan Pugh (son of Robert and Sarah) was
accused of marrying out of the unity of Friends" "His brother Robert was also
accused of accompanying him to the wedding." See also pp. 75-76 Film MR-Ph Gwynedd
MM minutes 1714-1747.
Swarthmore film MR-Ph pp. 98-99 "28th day of 12th mo., 1726, Gwynedd MM say that
Jane Pugh (dau of Robert and Sarah Pugh) was disabled in her limbs and that her parents
were unable to maintain her. Humphery Edward Foulke, George Lewis, and Hugh Griffith were
appointed to inform themselves of this affair and report at the next meeting. At the next
meeting they agreed to pay the Pughs four (?) pounds yearly towards her maintanence."
Apparently Robert and Sarah were still living in 1726!
I believe these records at Gwynedd leave little doubt that Sarah Evans was the wife of
Robert Pugh. Hopefully Rowland Can discover more from the Swarthmore records. Hopefully
the deaths of Robert and Sarah are there.
Hope this helps.
