>The bulk of these documents are after 1700 (rather past what we're looking
for), but still quite interesting. D33, >1688, is a wonderful pre-nuptial
settlement of Roger Price & Martha Bulkeley & includes Vron Goch sites &
>some names which could be interesting to track as they could be related.
Parishes are noted which is nice.
Beth, my ROBERTS family is connected with BULKELEYs. Have you any more web
links for the Bulkeley family? Is there an existing "ged.com"? (Ever the
optimist here : )
Once upon a time the family here in Wales, Wisconsin, must have had the
whole lineage traced as it is mentioned in the local "portrait & biography
" book, but (alas) with the death of my father-in-law who may have known
the details, all that remains is verbal reference to the family history.

PS Thank you for the above and all the documentary you post. As a

you find to say nothing of the research involved. Can barely wait for
after business hours when the phone line reverts to me so I can search the

Greetings gang!
Here's another estate for us to research: Penrhyn Estate. I found the
following statement in a booklet for tourists called:
Instidte Compact Guides: Snowdonia Norther Wales, APA Publications, part of
the Langanscheidt Group, 1998
p. 48:
"....the sleepy village of Ysbyty Ifan, centre of the National Trust's
large Penrhyn Estate."
Does anyone have the time to search the NLW for this estate?
Thanks,
Emily
Beth and all,
Thanks for all your hard work. I just wrote the library to see what I must
do to see the Rhiwlas Estate papers, if I get to go next summer.
Please do post your findings and cite the sources, Beth. You are correct,
all of us needs to cite our sources as we go. Without documentation, we
have nothing for certain. Let's all try to police each other (teacher
talk! <G>) on this in a kindly way. I tend to be as guilty as anyone as I
have not had time to enter my sources into the computer as yet....nor all
this line!
I have wondered about the Price name. In America we all know that Rhys
became Reese or Price (In Welsh, it is Prees), and we know that there were
several Rhys lines in our Welsh ancestors (as well as Maredudd), but then
they are common. I've wondered if we could be related to them in some way.
I don't have the connection, but perhaps the answer is in the Rhiwlas
Estate papers.
Regarding the Pugh line. We know that several families came from the same
general area and with the Rhiwlas Estate being 60,000 acres at one time, it
is wide to watch for all our related names. However, all of you know the
thrill of determining if our Pugh is the same Pugh, etc. I only find that
Ellen Pugh d/o of Ellis and Sinah Pugh was bpt 1676 and was born in Pen
Rhos on the Tyddyn y Garreg which was the birthplace and homem of father
Ellis Pugh. I've not found the location of this town as yet.
BTW, Pen means head and Rhos means marsh or moorland. Tyddyn is small farm
or cottage. Y Garreg means the rock, stone or cliff. This could translate
"the head of the marsh/moorland on the farm of the rock/stone/cliff.
Also, Rhiw means hillside. I see nothing for las.
I find this for our Rogers --Ciltalgarth, Llanfor Parish, Merionethshire,
Wales. Remember, I went to Llanfor. Unfortunately, the existing church is
the second one and not the one when our line was there, according to the
locals. Does anyone know the exact location of this town, also?
Cil means a nook or source of a stream or sheltered spot. Tal means end
and garth means jutting hill.
Best wishes,
Emily
Hi Cousins,
I think I found some interesting stuff @ NLW. For one thing, I sent an e-mail query to the head of the Dept. of Manuscript & Records re: the estate records in other locations. I also found a big batch of all kinds of records from Rhiwlas Estate given to the library in 1949 by the Price family & translated for the most part. Very cool. It's 47 pages printed with lots of "stuff", but some worthwhile things as well. Here's what I think is the site which you might go through yourselves: www.llgc.org.uk:81/ISYSquery/IRL578.tmp/25/doc Here's part of the library's introduction to the collection:
"The Price family of Rhiwlas claimed descent from a distinguished line of uchelwyr who settled in south-west Denbighshire. The family included Rhys ap Maredudd, alias Rhys Mawr, who fought for Henry Tudor at Bosworth in 1485. His son, Sir Robert ap Rhys became chaplain to Cardinal Wolsey and benefited greatly following the dissolution of the monasteries through the acquisition of land. It was Robert's third son, Cadwaladr, who actually settled at, and laid the foundation of the Rhiwlas estate during the second quarter of the sixteenth century."
It goes on with Price genealogy, etc.
In exploring Rhiwlas and Peniarth estate records (also available to view @ NWL), Vron Goch shows up as early as1580 in a pre-nuptial settlement, and seems to appear quite a bit as TYTHYN Y VRON GOCH and most often for "livery of siezin". I copied a few documents if you want me to post them - let me know (Emily: There are several entries with Pugh or Pughe from Montgomeryshire which I copied too in case you think Sarah's Robert Pugh might be from the old neighborhood).
Here's something someone might try to pursue & inform us on:
"A number of early nineteenth century plans of Rhiwlas demesne and Waen y Bala Common have been transferred to the Dept. of Pictures and Maps (Accession no. PG 6019)."
Also @ this same site (address above, "Dogfen WYSIWYG Document: Rhiwlas Estate, Deposit 1949 - Compiled by Merfyn Wyn Tomos, 1996") is a list of 13 books or documents as footnotes to the introduction. That's another good project for someone to try to track to original material.
The bulk of these documents are after 1700 (rather past what we're looking for), but still quite interesting. D33, 1688, is a wonderful pre-nuptial settlement of Roger Price & Martha Bulkeley & includes Vron Goch sites & some names which could be interesting to track as they could be related. Parishes are noted which is nice.
That's it for tonight, must get back to real work...
One last thought: I have no problem at all with relating undocumented information as such since many times it really is/was based on fact and can lead us to finding formal documentation, but when we relate information to each other, we should try to note where we got it. We should note the publication, website, family traditional history, or even hearsay if we think there can be some benefit from it. That was my last thought. Now my brain is empty.
Nos da,
Beth.
Greetings,
Although I haven't any firm committments for a trip to Wales as yet, I
would like for us to proceed as if we do. If it doesn't happen this
summer, it will soon. Of that I am certain. I MUST get back there.
In the case I and others are able to visit Wales this coming summer, I
would like to propose that as a group we pool our skills, time and local
resources to get the most out of this trip which should benefit all of you,
if there is any success at all. In the very least you will gain photos of
the important spots where our ancestors lived, but surely, those going will
be able to add something to what we know now.
So, pretend you are going and help those who may by assisting in the
preparations.
I would like to suggest several things, not knowing what is available to
all of you. I suggest these ideas and ask that others contribute their
two-cents.
1. Search the LDS files for microfilms and fich of primary records made in
our area of Wales and share them with the group.
2. Check for books and other resources at the LDS library at Salt Lake.
Some of these can be copied (parts) and perhaps we can persuade members to
make a pilgramage there.
3. Check your libraries old and rare books section for Welsh history, etc.
Don't forget the University libraries which often have much more.
4. See what books can be obtained via Interlibrary loan.
5. Check local genealogical society's library
6. Use the Web or write to obtain the hours, days and holdings that could
help us at the National Library in Wales, Bangor University, the parish
record office in Dolgellau, Wales and the Liverpool Maritime Records Office
(Is supposed to have passenger lists.)
7. Find out the locale of the LDS Family History Centers nearest Fron
Goch, Wales
8. Make a list of info we wish to obtain. For example, we know we need
iformation on the Rhiwlas estate as that is the estate containing Fron Goch.
More ideas??
So who's volunteering for what???

Does anyone have these at their local library or university library?

In case anyone's in the market:
There's a copy of Merion in the Welsh Tract by Glenn, 1896, for sale @ abebooks.com. It's hard cover, $95.
It's too rich for me, I'm afraid. Beth.
Dear Emily, etc.
I know you're trying to fit the farm of Frongoch into it's appropriate historical situation. The story I have is that Evan ap Evan was on the Frongoch farm which was part of the Rhiwlas Estate comprising 60,000 acres & owned by the Price family. J. Morris Evans, in Tapestry Threads, said in 1993, that in 1985, Roger T. Price was the 15th generation of family ownership & still farmed 15,000 acres. Maybe there are more informative records in the town of Rhiwlas, or maybe Roger T. Price is still around! Are there such things as Estate records, or would they be in individual hands? I guess I was wondering if maybe looking into Rhiwlas Estate would be worthwhile. I dunno. I'll post something on Powys List & see...
Beth.
Hi Cousins,
I'd like some clarification from someone who owns the "Royal Descent" book by Redell. I was told the book's title & author were, "Evans - Family of Royal Descent" by Helen Evans Redell. I ordered it from my local library on an ILL & received copies of the index only (their out of state library will not circulate the book itself) of "Evans - Americans of Royal Descent" by Thelma Evans Redell. Can I assume there is only one book, and what are the real title and author's name?
If I do have the index of the correct book, is anyone else interested in owning a photocopy of the whole book? According to my librarian, I can order copies of up to 50 pages & they'll send them to me. My thought was that if 4 of us ordered different sections (p. 1-50, 51-100, etc) from our libraries, we could each then copy & share with the others & all be "invested" to the same degree. I have the cover page, Table of Contents, & Index (p. 177 on). This is a thought born from frustration & I just though I'd toss it out.
Thanks! Beth.
Greetings,
For those of you who would like to find Frongoch and haven't as yet, please
go to:
http://uk.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?place=Frongoch,+Gwynedddb=ukgaz&scale
If you click on the orange arrow (triangle) at the bottom, the next map
would show Bala which is only 3 miles southeast of Frongoch. Notice
Rhilwas and Llanfor nearby.
When I used the above site, I had to enter the town of Frongoch to be
searched, then I was given a list from which to pick. After clicking on
the actual town form that list, I was shown the map.
Dink around and find the other places you have listed for our ancestors.
One of the best maps I've found to purchase is: Wales Tourist Map (scale 5
miles/8 kilometres to 1 inch) I purchased one at Borders Book store in
town for $4.95. It is published by Jarrold Publishing, Whitefriars,
Norwich, NR3 1TR.
There was only one copy at the time, but Borders may carry them regularly.
If you don't have a Borders near you and want a copy, I'll inquire here.
It was the first map I had found with the town of Fron-goch.
I know I drive many of you nuts with the variations in spelling, BUT.....on
the map above, the town is Fron-goch. On the sign post on the highway in
Wales, the town is Frongoch. The advertisement from the B & B is Fferm
Fron Goch. My tiny dictionary says farm is: ffarm (ffermydd). We have
seen the spelling Vron Goch in several old books, as well. Confused???
I am!
Enjoy,
Emily
I can't recall if I sent this.....one of ours???
It was on another list.
