Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
It's quite a while since our last News update.
Firstly, a reminder that we hold a weekly IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
meeting for discussion of all matteres related to FreeBMD. Note that this
coincides with a general UK and Ireland discussion on the same server.
We use the IIGS IRC server, which can be found at irc.IIGS.org on
port 6667. The channel is #FreeBMD and the time is every Monday
at 9 PM in the current UK timezone. At the moment, that is:
Monday 12:00 PST (Pacific Standard Time),
Monday 20:00 GMT (Greenwich Mean Time),
Monday 21:00 BST (British Summer Time),
Tuesday 06:00 EAST (Eastern Australia Standard Time)).
See http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/irc.html for more details.
The database has passed the 300,000 mark. Thank you for all your
efforts and keep those entries coming in. Just a reminder, you can
watch the progress by looking at the graphs, linked from the main
FreeBMD page ( http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/statgraphs/ ).
During the last couple of weeks (typically when Ben and I were on
our first two week holiday ever!) there were problems with
accessing the site and submitting entries. We hope these are
sorted out now. Please do report any problems you have.
The Syndicates (groups of volunteer transcribers) are up and
running. There are room for more syndicates, and many of the
existing ones have room for more transcribers. See
You may have seen the article on FreeBMD in Family Tree
Magazine recently. We have had many emails following that and a
substantial number of new transcribers have signed up.
Updating the web site has become a priority. Having had some
feedback on the website following the launch of the syndicates,
we'll be working on this over the next week or so. Meanwhile,
apologies to anyone who gets lost there.
Some bugs have emerged with the newer search engine. They are
also being worked on. Again, if you find peculiarities, please report
Finally, a reminder about the IRC (Internet Relay Chat) session
which we hold every week. See
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/irc.html for details. The RootsWeb
IRC server is open to all genealogists and Syndicates may also
like to arrange their own meetings there. We look forward to
Lastly, a thank you to Graham and to Andrew Billingshurst for
minding the fort at what turned out to be such a busy time over the
last few weeks.
