Regardless of what storage unit is used, there will be some privacy
issues we will not care for. Also, we can always produce a judicious
archive. We may not be able to archive every "Me, too!" reply to
messages, but a searchable archive CAN be produced on a host machine.
Obviously, it will take someone who can capture and move the messages in
a timely manner as agreed by the group.
For my 2 cents, I do not care where the list is as long as TGN has no
hold on it. I am also concerned with how to maintain the county lists
elsewhere. As I have purchased a hosting package on GoDaddy for my
museum, perhaps I can work out a way to put Okaloosa's county mailing
list there.

Mary Ellen,
I have created Google Groups for my counties; here's
Miami-Dade:
http://groups.google.com/group/flmiami-dade. I haven't
pulled the plug on the RootsWeb lists or message boards, nor do I
intend to. However the GenWeb Queries will be directed to the Group,
not the list or board.
If anyone else wants to create a Google Group for their county, I
would like to suggest that we maintain a consistent format for the
name. Use flcountyname. Or not -- it's just a suggestion.
Personally, I find Google less onerous than Yahoo. To create an
account, you need only provide your name and email address and
respond to the verification email to confirm your email address. I
think that's no more than RootsWeb required. Google does include
their text ads, but they only show up if you are viewing the group
online. No ads in the emails.
Another thing to consider is that eventually we may be requesting
server space from Google under their Google Apps for Education (we
need the 501(c)3
first). See:

and
