Your "intrusion" is quite welcome. (How could it be an intrusion when
this is a group mail list?) I have examined The Genealogy Network site
http://www.myfamilyinc.com/default.aspx?html=copyright and found
nothing but this:
"Content which has been contributed to public areas of the my
family.com, Inc. sites listed above by users remains the property of the
submitter or the original creator and we are a licensed distributor of
such content."
However, RootsWeb's statement contains the word "limited." I am not an
attorney, but I believe this is a legal term that is required for them
to publish (the submitted information on their site. What is not clear,
and probably requires a legal opinion, is what the "limits" are.
Normally, the statement would read something like ".... the submitter
grants a limited, one-time permit to publish the submitted material on
my
family.com servers."
Unfortunately, that is not what the RootsWeb statement says. It seems to
say that, "Yes we recognize that the submitter holds the copyright, but
we may decide to go ahead and distribute it wherever we like anyway."
I'm not very big on blogs as a reliable source, but here's one I found
interesting:
http://randysmusings.blogspot.com/2007/09/myfamily-inc-terms-and-conditio...
Being fervently paranoid, I agree that caution is the correct path here.
One thing that I found interesting is that no one mentioned the fact
that
Ancestry.com /MyFamily.com/The Generations Network, or whatever its
name is this week, has certainly not been shy about sudden decapitations
of competitors and customers in the past. They bought out and promptly
guillotined several genealogical software programs, including Ultimate
Family Tree, Family Origins, Generations, and Ancestry Family Tree, not
to mention the periodical Genealogical Computing, which has no successor
in print.
Cheers! :-)

Hi Bill,
Forgive me for intruding but...
It is the sentence between the two that you quoted that is the problem:
"By submitting Submitted Content to
RootsWeb.com, you grant
MyFamily.com, Inc., the corporate host of the Service, a limited
license to the Submitted Content to use, host, and distribute that
Submitted Content and allow hosting and distribution on co-branded
Services of that Submitted Content. "
You grant the parent company the right to ALLOW HOSTING AND
DISTRIBUTION ON CO-BRANDED SERVICES. (Please forgive the caps -- I am
not shouting -- I would use bold if it were available.) Those
co-branded services include
Ancestry.com which is a for-profit
company. I would never presume to tell anyone where they should
submit data -- that is an individual decision. But everyone should
be aware of all the facts.
The following are links to information about the Internet
